I thought it was all about how much information you can access per second. But people are always on about 'Niall's bandwidth', and the implication is that he has to pay for it. What the feck is bandwidth, and why does he have to pay for it. I though t'internet was supposed to be free n all.

Apologies for being such a feckwit.

I swear I'll never pay for bandwidth - if I can't get it free I don't want it. Besides, you don't know where it's been...

Bandwidth is the total amount of data uploaded to users from a website/server over a given time.

Example: 100 people download a 1 megabyte file from a website, 100 megs of bandwidth is used.

Many hosting services charge websites that exceed a specific bandwidth limit and the charge is usually quite considerable when compared to the basic hosting cost.

Over the years the caf has exceeded its bandwidth limit quite regularly which has led to temporary locking of the site and a big hit on my pocket. As a result, attempts to cut down bandwidth usage have been made and it has led to the accusation "you're a waste of bandwidth" becoming part of mainstream caf terminology.

Bandwidth isn't quite as big an issue as it used to be since the site became forum orientated. However, if you think that means I'm gonna activate avatars, signatures or any other similar bullshit you are sadly mistaken!!

I hope that clarifies this issue for Plechazunga and any other internet illiterates out there :)

cheers Niall

seriously when they whack you with a big charge you should ask for donations...it's not fair for you to have to pay it

i reckon a fair few of us would cough up so long as you didn't take the piss

speaking of which, can anyone lend us a fiver? just till the end of the month like...

Not a bad idea, Plech. It could be done through PayPal pretty easilly.

So you're actually paying, out of your own pocket - To keep AEBM squabbling with Devilish and DJS squabbling with just about everyone.

But seriously, fair play to you. How much does it cost you?

I am sure Niall is a clever chap and will use this place as a selling point when he job hunts. People ain't gonna pay for this type of thing - there are too many free ones around.

Of course I'm not gonna charge for the site, that would be internet suicide!

The ads on the site bring in a small trickle of revenue which helps pay the bills so you don't need to worry about my financial situation. I enjoy living off wormy water and maggotty bread - reading Rams' daily pearls of wisdom in the general forum makes it all worthwhile.... :)

Actually I've got my eye on the BBC Chairman position thanks! ;)
