The only time it hasn't been an issue was when Mourinho had the most senior player be captain - but Van Gaal and Solskjaer really massively botched it.

Should it just be club policy that the clubs most capped player on the pitch should be captain, to stop manager's making a mess of it?

Does it really make any difference?

A bad captain makes a difference. A good captain for the most part doesn't

Does it? What can a bad captain mess up? I think a captain is fairly meaningless. A leader doesnt need a thing around his arm just to be a leader.

Martinez and Casemiro are both leaders without an armband. Current Ronaldo is going to be a whinging prat whether he has it or not.

How does today's game play out any different if you put it on De Gea or whoever instead?

Roy Keane really did a number on this fanbase... The captain in modern football has little relevance beyond organising Christmas parties

This is an awful take.

Don’t know about todays game. But it’s about the long term message. We’ve all been talking about the great team spirit this season. So to give it to the player who has been our only source of toxicity this season sends the wrong message. Almost like “bad behaviour gets rewarded”. Should have gone to anyone of DDG, Martinez, or Casemiro

Captain status is more of a symbolic title a lot of the time. What matters is we have a few leaders/‘captains’ in our squad who can influence other squad members to do better.
