Unlike TV shows, who routinely get the finale all wrong, great movies have memorable endings.

Was being discussed at work earlier and there were many nominations. Some heartwarming, others with an unexpected twist, and those that blow your mind.

The one that came to mind for me is Back To The Future. Probably because I was the right age at the time and remember it so fondly. I was already wowed by the movie, but to then hear Doc say “where we’re going we don’t need roads…” oh boy, the realisation hits and the jaw drops. I’ll never forget it, and seeing it will always make me smile.

Ending descriptions should be spoilered to be on the safe side, but if you haven’t seen BTTF, you need help.

The ending of Andrei Rublev is the one that came to mind immediately. It’s pure beauty.

Batman and Robin. Even when I was young, I was really, really glad it ended. So that's my best ending to a film.

Not the best ending but I watched Apocalypse Now Redux multiple times in pure anticipation of that Marlon Brando speech at the end / near end. Hits much different after one „endured“ (love it but Brando is my goat and you don‘t get to see him until the finale) the whole build up instead of fast forwarding (+ the intro is amazing as well of course)

The Blade Runner "Tears in Rain" monologue will forever be one of the great ones for me. I know it's not quite the ending scene, but certainly close enough.

Shindler's List.
Schindler's List's ending was certainly extremely moving. Seeing the actual people he saved and/or their descendants made it so much more real.

Another WW2 movie with an ending that stuck with me was Das Boot. What an absolute punch to the gut at the last minute. And so perfectly symbolic as to how the war went for the German U-boat fleet.

The Dark Knight has one of the coolest endings I have ever seen in at the cinema.
Nolan usually wraps up his movies superbly. As already mentioned The Prestige is probably my favourite ending of all time.

Honorable mention to Inglorious Basterds, very entertaining finale, and packed a surprise even for a Tarantino flick.

Dark Knight was pretty epic, everyone applauded when I saw it at the cinema. All three of the Dark Knight movies end brilliantly, but the middle film takes the crown.

The Prestige is in top spot for me, The Usual Suspects and Se7en have also great endings.

I second The Last Of The Mohicans, Nolan's Batman films and Inception. I'd also add Rogue One, War For The Planet Of The Apes, Gattaca and Hostiles.

I'll have to think of a few films for the thread, but I agree with the bolded. Whatever you think of Nolan, he's very good at closing his films in an epic or moving way. There usually to seems a bit of a build up towards the conclusion and when it comes, it punctuates the film with a final stop superbly, with good use of editing and music.
