There's been a surge in the last few years of popstars who don't quite fit the traditional idea of pop music and it's bloody brilliant to witness. I was going to make a Self Esteem thread, but then realised I also want to make a CMAT thread, a Chappell Roan thread, a Charli XCX thread, a Billie Eilish thread, a PinkPantheress thread, a Rachel Chinouriri thread, a Moonchild Sanelly thread, etc. The traditional popstar is still thriving (see TSwizz, Olivia Rodrigo, Sabrina Carpenter, etc) which is great but it's wonderful to see a shift away from that longstanding formula and the, for want of a better word, weirdos flourishing.

Heard some of Chappell Roan’s stuff the other today and thought it was pretty good. The production is top notch.

It’s not ‘weirdos’. It’s women making music outside the prism of the patriarchy.

Women as artists rather than making consumable content. Creation of art is the start line. Money is picked up along the way.

A whole gaggle of female artists making music on their own terms, sexualising their output per song, not in totality of self.

Who could have possibly guessed that it would lead to better music that’s better received?……..
