The 100 greatest football moments of all time

“Apart from that one strike, I can’t really recall another great Roberto Carlos free-kick. He’s all brute force and not much else – there’s no variation, is there? Just bombas.” Rivelino

He's not far wrong. He knocked one in against China at '02 World Cup and I recall one for Madrid, but he undoubtedly forged a reputation for 10 years thereafter based on the 'banana' kick, great as it was.

Yeah he rattled in a few for Madrid, but his success ratio was no doubt lower than some of his team-mates - Figo, Zidane, Hierro and Beckham.

Nice read and a decent list but a bit odd that Barca are the most featured club by far.

"It wasn't the best team that won, but the luckiest" Matthaus

Eat a dick cnut.

Bitter twat. With 3 minutes stoppage time remaining, the Bayern players thought it was over. The Bayern ribbons were even put on the trophy, but with a slim scoreline of 1-0, that's risky.

We weren't lucky, we just never gave up.

Funny how people will call Liverpool funny but Man Utd's win was due to sheer bravery and never giving him ;)

Liverpool didn't give up either. They came out and thought if they could get at least one goal, it would give them a chance........and quite clearly it did.

Yeah Liverpool was a great comeback but it was a great ten minute period rather than a single great moment as Solskjaer's winner was.

My memory might be failing me but back in 2005 I'm pretty sure most people weren't saying that ;)

I even remember a Liverpool fan here having the piss taken out of him when he said they don't need to finish top 4 as they will win the CL, I think some mod made that his tag as well :D

You could say Man utd had a good 5 minutes ;)

I absolutely love Bergkamp's winner against Argentina. The more you watch it the more spectacular it gets.

Well Jazz, I can only speak for myself, but I've always found Liverpool's 2005 European Cup that much harder to stomach exactly because it was such an amazing 'against all odds' victory.
As a United supporter I'll never turn cartwheels when Liverpool win the European Cup, but I certainly won't deny their victory was a true classic.

Be that as it may, I think the 'one in a million chance' victory is ingrained in the human psyche as something glorious, fair or not. Very few people complain that Sauron 'really dominated, and ought to have won; it was a moral victory for the vastly superior troops of Sauron' when they read The Lord of the Rings.

It was the climax of a superb game: World Cup knockout football at its impeccable best.

Isn't this the same blogger who left C.Ronaldo off his list of 100 best players for some really petty reason?

I think the reason was to generate interest and debate.

All these list things are just opinions, which we all know are like arseholes (everyone has one and most are disgusting).

It's a great read, gave me an hour of reading at work. Everyone has their own opinions on the rank but if you ignore that then it's excellent.

63. Zidane loses his head

I know it's recent, and when it comes to list such as these, there is a strong temptation to have more recent moments further down the list, and older more weighty stuff higher up... but in 40-50 years, people will still show and vividly remember Zidane's headbutt, and it will appear in at least the thop 5 on lists like these. It is just one of those football moments...

Mind, I suppose considering it's not actually football being played, I can see why it would be lower down.... but yeah, it's something no one will ever forget.

That goal was the sole reason Carlos finished second in the FIFA player of the year award. First sign of how ridiculous and clueless the voting was and would become.
