Tragic news for all Terry Pratchett fans, he has revealed that he is suffering from a rare form of Alzheimer's.

But the writer of the hugely popular Discworld fantasy series has reassured fans that "there's time for at least a few more books yet".

Showing good humour despite the news, Pratchett called the diagnosis "an embuggerance" and told fans: "PS - 'I am not dead'".

The 59-year-old writer, who has sold more than 55 million books around the world, had undergone medical tests after having problems with his dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

Pratchett wrote in a statement: "I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news.

He added: "PS: I would just like to draw attention to everyone reading the above that this should be interpreted as 'I am not dead'.

"I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else.

"I know it's a very human thing to say 'Is there anything I can do', but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry."

it's a bloody shame, but it's good to see that he's taking it with the usual sense of humour.

i wonder which rare form of alzheimer's he is suffering from tho...

Typically Terry eh.
All the reports say that its 'early-onset' Alzheimers. I don't know what that means besides it being an early onset of Alzheimer.
Am hoping he writes a lot more than the 'few' books that he mentioned are left in him.

Yeah Suresh, me too. I remembered that you were a big fan while posting this.

But like he said, there is still a lot to look forward to.

This is really sad. One of the better writers around. Suresh introduced me to his books and I must have read 9-10 of them this year itself.

Gutted i remember reading his stuff as a kid like diggers, trucks and wings. then moving on to the discworld stuff and i've never looked back.

trucks, diggers and wings were very good. but yeah the discworld series is awsome. i should find the time to re-read the ones i have.

 Very funny man. Terrible news.

Try the Watch series. Starts with Guards! Guards!

Pretty much any book will do since each is a novel in itself and while the characters are common the plots are unrelated. Some of his newer stuff isn't that good though.

Laughed aloud on a train once, reading a TP book.

When is The Colour of Magic on TV? I thought it was Christmas, but I haven't seen any promos for it.

:( gutted by this news, i still have a letter he wrote to me when i was 12 framed on my book shelf, glad to see the spirit he's taken it with though.
