The two-day Belfast music festival has been cancelled, due to the number of other festivals, organisers have said.
Last year, 35,000 fans packed into Ormeau Park to see The Killers and Razorlight at Tennent's Vital.
Promoter Tennents said it was scrapping this year's event because with more than 500 UK music festivals it could not get enough high-calibre acts.
They said they were investigating other opportunities and hoped to continue their relationship with music in NI.
Tom McCusker, Managing Director for Inbev Ireland, which owns Tennents, said it had been extremely disappointing.
"We feel deeply disappointed for all of the fantastic fans of Tennent's Vital who have not only helped to make the festival one of Northern Ireland's best live events, but also a real cultural asset to our country," he said.
"We'd also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the role of the event's fans in contributing to the immense and remarkable success of Tennent's Vital since its inception in 2002."
Organisers said 2008 had been a difficult climate for live music events with a number of high profile events cancelled across the UK.
They added that the sheer number of festivals in the UK made it difficult to secure "top acts within a climate of apparent over-saturated scheduling of talent at this level".
Launched in 2002, Vital had brought headliners including Snow Patrol, Kaiser Chiefs and Kings Of Leon to Belfast.
