Sachin Tendulkar's blood in new book about cricket star

A special edition new biography of Indian cricketing star Sachin Tendulkar will contain drops of his blood, its publishers have reportedly said.

Costing $75,000 (£49,000) each, 10 copies are being printed containing a signature page mixed with his blood.

The 37-year-old batsman described the unusual tribute as "mind blowing".

With more than 1,500 pictures, the "Tendulkar Opus" biography will weigh 37kg (80lb) and each of its 852 pages will be edged in gold leaf.

Tendulkar's career has spanned two decades, during which he has scored more than 30,000 runs and become the only player to have hit a double century in a one-day international.

The 10 special edition copies, which will contain traces of Tendulkar's blood mixed into the paper pulp for the signature page, have reportedly already been pre-ordered ahead of publication next February.

Carl Fowler, chief executive of the publisher Kraken Opus, told the UK's Guardian newspaper that their book may not be "everyone's cup of tea".

"Some may think it's a bit weird," he said. "But the key thing here is that Sachin Tendulkar to millions of people is a religious icon.

"And we thought how, in a publishing form, can you get as close to your god as possible?"

Kraken is also expected to publish about 1,000 regular copies of the book to be sold for between $2,000 and $3,000.

When asked what he thought about the "blood" special editions, Tendulkar's former teammate, Vinod Kambli, told NDTV: "I am taken aback."

why does Tendulkar think the tribute is mindblowing? Its not like fans are donating blood for/to him. He is giving drops of his blood for some book...

I don't know, I don't really care.

I've always admired the pressure he has had to deal with since he was 16. Not easy being the hope of more than a billion people.

Statistically, it's admirable enough that he carries the pressure heaped upon him by more than a billion people. But you have to watch Sachin in India to truly understand the pressure he plays under.

When Mumbai play away, they get incredible support from the people in the home city because Sachin plays for them. I was there when he played here against Chennai this season gone by in the IPL, like 30-40% of the crowd were in Mumbai colours. But when Sachin scores a boundary or so, it's the entire crowd that is on its feet.

Sachin has denied this news.

Just as I suspected...it makes no sense...

Zing, I've watched Sachin, in India and in Australia...I realize there are many who cheer for him rather than the team or nation, as can be evidenced by occurrences in the past, when fans used to go home after he got out.

Sachin Tendulkar said:
"I understand this information came out during the Test match. As I was focusing on the game, I only got to hear about it yesterday (Thursday). There is no truth in my blood being part of the book. The book is basically a photographic publication that celebrates my life and is not an autobiography or a biography.

The proceeds from the book will go to charity. We will do more events that will benefit charities, but that will be decided once the book is completed."
