Jack Black has cancelled the rest of his band Tenacious D's world tour after his bandmate made a controversial "joke" about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

The School of Rock star said he was "blindsided" by Kyle Gass’s remarks on stage, adding that "all future creative plans" for the duo are on hold. Gass has apologised.

The comedy-rock group were on stage in Sydney, Australia, on Sunday when Gass was asked to make a birthday wish.

Gass sparked controversy when he replied: "Don’t miss Trump next time."

This makes me like Jack Black less.

Not all that clever to be so outspoken when there’s probably a bunch of trigger happy crazies looking for payback

Kind of get being miffed due to this but not sure if it warrants cancelling the whole tour. If anything it's dark humour that you wouldn't be surprised to hear someone like Jimmy Carr making.

Awkward situation seeing as he was campaigning for and appearing with Biden recently I suppose. Biden comes out condemning what happened and then one of your mates says that. Obviously goes against official messaging, and Biden and/or Democrats would no doubt be asked what they thought of it all, if they disavowed etc. if they weren't already.

Probably just wants to restrict the amount of damage done by nipping it in the bud as much as possible.

Edit: Could even put Biden at greater risk of an attempt on his life if you don't try and backpedal away from it and I'm sure he doesn't want that.

Absolutely. But go on the charm offensive, explain it was a live on stage adrenaline fueled joke, apologise over and over and move on. Even throw the freedom of speech thing back at them.

Black has now made it a much bigger thing and looks like an even bigger elitist suck up than he already did to the maga crowd around the world.

Maybe. I get it though. The US is very much on the brink at the moment though so stirring the pot isn’t the best thing right now

I instantly threw away all my peaches in anger when I heard this.

I get it to be fair. We live in a world where artists have been shot on stage in the past.

It could well be that he’s just thinking about his career, including in Hollywood, but I’d like to think he’s mostly taking precaution against the many idiots that would react to such a comment.

Thing is (if you can catch the video) he didn’t react with outrage at the time. He took it as the dark joke it was intended to be.

It seems like he’s been advised by someone around him, and has over reacted accordingly.

Either way it’s fairly shitty to throw his partner under the bus in this way. If I was cage I’d tell Jabbles he can’t be in the Kyle Gass Project anymore

This makes me like Jack Black less.

In fairness he has fat bags of money on the line with all the family friendly franchise-type movies he does - Kung Fu Panda, Jumanji, think he's one of the leads in the new Minecraft movie (current favourite for the 2025 Best Picture award).

He'll probably just let the heat die down for a few months.

So is it just the tour that’s cancelled or have they been cancelled. Cos I do like Tribute and Wonderboy.

Seems a bit of an overreaction, especially seeing as he wasn’t that arsed to begin with.

If course he would have found it funny. Dude wouldn't have made that joke if the rest of his people wouldn't find it funny.

Doesn't mean you can go around making jokes about failed assassination attempts on presidents a few days later. Blacks just protecting himself, fair enough.

Sure Trump himself loves jokes about failed assassination attempts, I'm sure he wouldn't have been offended.

There was backlash, just not widely reported

Nobody takes that lunatic seriously. His party (which has been deregistered by the AEC) make The Tea Party look sane. He only got a Senate seat due to our odd version of PR with preferences and then quotas. He got a miniscule 0.12% of the vote but got lots of One Nation preferences when the quota system didn't give them enough voters for another seat.

Presumably got pressured by sponsors, contract people etc. But it still makes him look like a right spineless piece of crap.

Just apologise and that's it. No need to let loads of fans down and stab your band member in the back.

Why are people jumping to the idea he stabbed Kyle in the back? It's very likely they talked it out with the management etc.. and the decision was amicable probably even one shared by Kyle. I don't think Kyle has said or implied that Jack threw him under the bus.
Can't help but feel people wanna give this a pass because it's Trump and if it was anyone else bar Musk they'd say "Probably the right thing to do".

Soon as it dies down and likely after the election when the Hillbillies have chilled and put their guns and thoughts of vengeance away, they'll be back.

What's the big deal with it being a week after? Should be allowed make jokes like that if you want, most Tenacious D fans would find it funny I'd say.

Fair enough he's annoyed if his family put at risk but just do an apology and move on. Feels like Black has put Kyle more at risk now by drawing attention to it. Shit for the fans too. Black gone down a lot in my estimation anyway.

Gass has taken down the apology now anyway.

Surely the two Venn diagram circles that are Tenacious D fans and Trump fans are close to fully divorced?

Very odd to cancel a whole tour.

They had Neil Hamburger supporting them when I saw them in Dublin in the 00s. KG’s joke was tame compared to that set!

Obviously it was a clever thing to do to say that, even tongue in cheek. But surely an apology and something about them being a humorous band that unfortunately crossed a line should have been enough.
