Ten Hag defends Maguire
"I have to coach him and back him. I back him because I believe in him. I can see his qualities. Quality is there. Almost 50 caps for England, he has high potential. Then it is about him. We all believe in him."

Manager of the Month award
"What we achieved we did together, it says we are in the right direction. There is a lot of space for improvement, we have to. It says we are in the right direction but have to work harder."

More on injuries
"Anthony Martial been training with the group all week, really happy with that situation. Marcus Rashford also joined training, so we are happy with that."
Ten Hag adds that Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams are still long-term absentees.

Man City test
"I approach this by looking at ourselves. Manchester United, we want to win every game. The aim for Sunday is nothing else. We have to do our best and of course a good plan, and the execution."

Manchester derby
"I have played many derbies! I know what they are, what the rivalry, what they do with eachother. I know it is the most important game in the Manchester area.
"It excites me. You do everything to win that game."

How to stop Haaland
"We don't play against Haaland, we play against Man City. We are convinced of our capabilities. If we act as a team then we can beat our opponents. That is the belief we need, and we need it even more Sunday."

Mental health of players
"It is an aspect of top football, it is an aspect of our work. We set conditions for that, we also have experts about.
"He (Maguire) is doing quite well, but there is always room for improvement. If he believes in his own skills he will be back, and I am convinced of that. His abilities are really high."

Glad we’ve got Martial back and all our players made it through the international break unscathed. Thought judging with our luck during these breaks, we were bound to pick up an injury to a key player or two like Varane & Eriksen.

Love ten hags press conferences. Confident in his own ability is good to see.

To what end? It’s hardly being kept a secret if the manager just tells the press.

Think what they meant is he told photographers don't include photos of either as I will update in presser on Fri

Late unexpected gut punch to the opposition defence which may have setup to deal with certain types of players all week

Great news that Rashford/Martial could be in line to play and maybe even start. The reports were sounding grim yesterday.

Even if they don’t play tomorrow
It means they should be back next weekend and hopefully ready for the next busy 6 weeks

Happy that he’s backing Maguire.

Martial being back if a massive plus. Hope he continues his transformation under ETH. Will be a fascinating game.

Surely its a bit risky to play Martial for many minutes with the injury hes had and his history.

If Rashford and Martial have been sharp in training this week then they will definitely start. The threat from their speed and quality when we break will be the best source of goals.

Gap in fixtures a blessing in disguise.
Yes and no. Its good that we (may) have Rashord amd Martial back, but going that long without a competitive game when we are in good form could have a negative impact.
Especially given that the last game against Sheriff wasn't that competitive

Good answers to the Maguire questions.
Yeah. I thought he answered it well especially as English isn’t he’s first language.

It’s easy for Southgate who isn’t dropping him, but when it’s a manager who’s dropped a player and the team has clearly improved you need to find the right balance.

Over praising saying “hes great he’ll recover his form etc” will just sound fake, but then again doing a Mourinho (while the player is still there ) won’t help things either “ I do what others before me were scared to do, I dropped the invincible this is football genius this is special and now you see Varane and Martinez how they play and how United defend like top team “

He's not really gonna say he's shit or finished is he, even though he might think it. Maguire will simply never be good enough for United. His only hope is a change of manager now because his starting XI days are over. They have to be if we have any hope of moving forward.

I know it's harsh but any aspirations of United getting back to the top make it impossible for Maguire to survive. You can't have both.

Yeah he struck the right balance. Didn't criticize him, just said he believes in his talent along with his teammates and coaching staff and if he has the self belief he can come back stronger than before. I'm far from a fan of Maguire and want him gone asap but since he;s going to be here this season at least, we will need him to perform well and those words of encouragement should help a little.

I thought his comments on United playing City (and not Haaland), and going into every game to win were excellent.

He categorically said that we need to focus on our own abilities and principles and 100% believe that we can win. That is exactly what we need on Sunday.

Everyone knows City are very good but United can go do a number on them. We are a high quality but mentally flaky squad. If we can get the right mentality for this game, we can get a win. Its good to see the manager making a good point of that to the players.

Don't worry too much about the opposition. Focus and believe in yourself.

Got me truly in the mood for the game on Sunday.

His answers are never anything more than common sense but they’re always good to read. Refreshing that he doesn’t just spout bollocks for the sake of it.

I think if Maguire humbles himself a bit and trusts in the coaching he can get back into good form. Just not sure he's fully bought in. Would be nice to see that.

He reminds me of Fergie in that he says just enough and shows faith in his players without overstating the fact

Bahahahahhahha the way he said it......

"I have to coach him...." yeah mate, we know and we share the pain

Sure, he's not gonna throw the squarehead under the bus, Erik has class, but we know the truth. He ain't playing a game again.

Surely its a bit risky to play Martial for many minutes with the injury hes had and his history.

Watching the presser, it was interesting that he said players with doubt and then said Martial but, he has been training all week. Think it will be a case of hopefully Rashford starting and then Martial/Ronaldo to come depending on how things are going.

Hopefully for Martial to get a start in the Europa league and fingers crossed no more time out for injuries.

ETH is great and he comes across as a 'No Nonsense' type of guy.
He seems to have hosed down any of the Ronaldo saga B/S and we can only imagine what would have happened if Jose was still at the helm as he could never resist a provocative comment in his pressers.

I love the way he is able to take control of every narrative.
