Just giving the old Season Review DVD's a rewatch, and I've gotten to the 00/01 season and for some reason I've forgotten just how damn good Sheringham was this season. Felt like he scored a long range goal in every game. Just banging them in from everywhere, and some of his interplay with Scholes was exceptional.

I wish we got him a few years younger. He filled that Cantona void being a player with flair, finesse, style and ability.

He wasn't well regarded in his first three seasons at the club if I recall correctly, he was a bit-part in his second and third (despite scoring at the Nou Camp), but the purple patch he hit in his fourth season was good.

Yeah it was so much fun. Always remember a last minute winner at Fulham in the cup during that crazy purple patch. Sheringham was a real classy player.

Really? I remember people getting on board from the off

If Ruud hadn't crocked his knee in the spring following the agreed move to United, ol' Teddy probably would have been on the open market that summer - one of the strikers would have been on the outs. Instead, Teddy stuck around and enjoyed a superb season.

I think Cole would have went before Sheringham. Cole left in 2001 because he wanted game time. I think Ruud's signing hurt Cole more than Sheringham.

Sheringham and Van Nistelrooy would have been a very interesting pair, though. Would have liked to see those two together.

97/98 he was replacing Eric and we won nothing so he was regarded as a failure.

98/99 and 99/00 he was a bit part player but scoring goals in the 99 FA Cup and CL final meant he was a cult hero no matter what.

00/01 he was brilliant and our best player probably, definitely the best we saw of Sheringham here. He shouldn't have left in the summer of 2001 really, Fergie wanted to keep him I'm pretty sure. He'd have got plenty of games especially with Cole leaving early in the 01/02 season and Yorke basically being finished here by then. Think him and Ruud would have worked well together.

Scholes has spoken very highly of Sheringham, think he had him in his favourite Utd teammates 11. It feels strange to think he was only here 4 seasons, feels like he was here for much longer.

My memory of Sheringham's United career was that he has a really good first 4 or 5 months in the 97/98 season. He was playing with confidence and dropping off Cole who really started to kick on his own United career at this point. Our attacking play all round was brilliant but our form fell off a cliff after Christmas. As did Sheringham's.

During the treble season I remember always being disappointed when he started. Maybe because he was made a bit of a scapegoat in the media for our poor form in the run in the season before but after his goal in the Nou Camp he had a place in my heart and I began to appreciate his attributes and abilities more when he played.

His last season was by far his most productive for us. Such clean and precise finishing. Delicate at times. And he scooped the PFA player of the year award too,
Not sure who could be compared to him in todays game.

Such a wonderfully elegant player, and he a had a way of finding pleasing angles for a pass. I loved watching him. He was a bit unfortunate that first he was seen as the replacement for Cantona, then Yorke came in who had a blinding first season, and then shortly after we had the monster that was Ruud. So he sort of gets overlooked by comparison to what other players were doing before, during and after his time. Its tough to stand out as a player in that era. But I'd love to have that quality in the squad again now.

Anyway, he scored in both finals in the treble season, so he's achieved more than most strikers ever do.

He was absolutely amazing that season from memory easily ahead of the rest of strikers goals wise. That said I remember all sorts of goals going in from each of them, overhead kicks from Coley, great headers from Yorke.

I think he did better when he was the main main. He often struggled with the rotation and was 4th choice in the Treble season

His best run of form coincided with Yorke's decline in 00/01.

The signing of Veron is what ruined any potential chances of him starting during 01/02. Probably why he opted to not sign a new contract.

Fergie started to prefer 4411 at that point with Scholes/Veron as the number 10.

The unsung hero of the 99 CL final.
Absolute legend.

There weren’t many players around who could’ve come in to replace Cantona and keep us ticking.
I remember the match against Juventus early in the 97/98 season when we beat them at OT, Sheringham scored a banging header in that game, I thought that win was a real statement of intent.

We had periods during that season where we looked absolutely unplayable, arguably better than the treble season, and that after losing Keane for the season very early in.
We looked well on track to win the PL, perhaps even the CL, injuries to Giggs, Scholes and Schmeichel derailed our season and we eventually bottled the league in sort of a similar fashion as in 11/12, although I rate the 97/98 team much higher.
As well as losing the CL tie to Monaco with makeshift lineups.

00/01 was Teddy’s best season for us though, certainly from a goal scoring aspect.

Not for the 00-01 season, but I remember when he first joined us and missed like three penalties out of three, and was taken off duty
It was bizarre as i seemed to remember him taking some great ones for Spurs.

Ole’s winning goal in the 99 final was often talked about and rightly so, but not enough recognition was given to Teddy’s equaliser i feel. Without his goal, the 99 treble definitely wouldn’t happen

Teddy also assisted Ole’s goal, brilliant header, absolute United legend as far as I’m concerned.
Lord knows we don’t have many European cups, every European cup we have won is incredibly special, the lads who made these happen deserve a unique place in United folklore, until the end of times.

I remember him being scapegoated by a lot of United fans for us losing the league in 1997/1998. Arsenal fans gave him a lot of stick too.

I think he was an easy target because he was a flash Cockney and I think many resented the fact he came in to replace Eric Cantona..

Overall he had a decent debut season I thought, he fitted in seamlessly and developed a good striking partnership with Andy Cole. Unfortunately their form dipped around February and March. Ole suffered with injuries, we ended the season where the strikers barely scored any goals.

Season two and three was quite difficult for Teddy as he was nothing more than a bit-part player.

Season four 2000/01 he was tremendous. And thank feck for that because Dwight Yorke had checked out and Cole missed almost a third of the season having to deal with an achilles injury.
Sheringham was the main man up front and he delivered. Was our player of the season iirc and picked up the PFA Player of the Year Award.

Teddy Sheringham was one of a number of great CF's in the 1990's. What he lacked in pace he more than made up in intelligence, composure, first touch, link-up play, finishing and aerial ability.
He was a top footballer and popular amongst his teammates because he was a very easy player to play off.

Has Sheringham ever explained his side of the story regarding Cole?
