You could put eleven superstars together, and Maccabi might still have beaten them.

We need to give our eleven best players - with the odd changes here and there - a run together in order to start performing like a team.

Every week we have several changes of personnel, and/or players in different positions. You may as well be playing eleven total strangers.

But Maccabi's first two goals were brilliant. Maybe we should snap up one of their strikers? Cup-tied I know, but for the future.

Surely it is not quite as bad as playing strangers Liv - they are some of the worlds best and should be able to adapt to different formations and playing with different personel.

I am sure every manager would like to play what he considers to be his best 11 but with injuries, loss of form and demands from so many games it will always be hard to have a settled team.

Therefore the team with the best squad and not the best 11 will always come out on top these days.

True about the squad - but to utilise the best we have, surely we need to play a settled team/formation, even allowing for the injuries we have had.

And players should be in their best positions I would have thought.

I think managers look at each game as it comes more now...every opposition is different and managers will play players to cope with different teams.

MU's squad is not as strong as it could be and having suffered a few injuries the team is also suffering.

I am sure Fergie knows his players best position but, taking into account all we have already said, it is not always possible to play them there.

However the trip to Haifa is really too big a drain for them. I just wonder why Fergie has put out such a strong team against haifa. We should have started with Timm, Roche, Lynch, etc.

i think we needed to give them games.. forlan needs a good run of goal scoring spree.. rio is just back and needs a run.. partnering him with JOS was a good idea to see if Blanc can finally go to the bench permanently..

Fortune is expected to be Giggs' substitute this season so he also needed a game... RVN is almost back so Ole was given a run in case he doesn't get to play much anymore..

SAF will still prefer 4-4-1-1 and Ole and Forlan will both go back the bench when normal services resume..

Every time players play well against us there is someone on here the day after suggesting we should buy them.

I still harbour the hope that we might find a couple of unknowns and turn them into stars. Both those Israeli goals were excellent. I would prefer those kind of players to vastly over-rated.over-priced prima-donnas, or South Americans.

We need a striker. Where do you suggest we look then?

Yes we need a striker, but it does my head in when people start adding names to the already ridiculous list of players linked to us, just because they have had a good game against us.

For the record I don't think, other than Di Canio, I don't think we will sign a striker for less than 10 million. If we are looking for a striker that will not be used in the champions league this season then the scope is larger e.g. Shevchenko, Morientes(would prefer pace to guile though). However if we are looking for a player available for the CL then I would go for Paolo or Vassel.

Well I've never jumped in with shouts of buy this player or that player simply because I hate buying established stars, especially foreign ones. So if I see a player who seems to have potential, I would rather consider that player than some of the so-called "big names" that we get linked with.

Danny Nardiello's got potential. I think we should go with him.

I think the title of this thread could well turn out to be the crux of why United are below par in the league these days.

I always remember Andy Gray on Sky commenting with frequency about how hard the United players worked to win the ball back when not in possession. And how Giggs and Bex would track back tirelessly for 90 minutes and work the flanks with fast counter attacks.

Does anyone else feel we just need to up the tempo a bit in the PL?

We never seem to go for teams' throats any more. It's not the players we have or don't have, it's the attitude and approach to games IMO.

How about considering James Beattie of Southampton?

He's English, is tall ( 1.85m ) , strong & a great header of the ball ( unlike any of the present United strikers ), is a great grafter, is young enough ( 24 years ), has a decent scoring rate ( 36 goals in 147 games for Southampton, of which he started in 107 ), wudn't mind being a squad player at this stage, & the best thing is he's not Cup-tied in Europe!

The second goal was by a defensive midfielder <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

Anyhow, I get to see them week in week out, they are not that good really. Definately not United class. Katan, who scored in both matches against us, struggles to get any goals in the local league.
