Taking a pen without looking at the ball?

That was a beauty. He'd hiked his shorts right up, too; may have been a bollock in the keeper's eyeline. Poor bastard never stood a chance.

No idea but every time I watch Toney I think he's excellent and really want us to sign him.

Eric Bailly tried it at AFCON.

Cote d'Ivoire were eliminated as a result.

Thomas Muller used to go it for every penalty till he missed one against A.Madrid I think. He was really good at it as well.

When I took my penalty in the 2003 Dorset Insurance Institute cup 6-a-side semi final, I didn't take my eye off the ball at all.

Hard and low into the inside side netting, unsavable. Might be one of the best pens ever.

I have tried a no lock pen a few times (not in a game), never ever thought "this is worth the risk".

That England 5 taking penalties was almost cheating.

Unreal from Toney.

A true classic, what a cauldron.

There was actually a crowd of about 50 odd people. The walk from the halfway line was genuinely nerve-wracking!

Also knowing that if I missed, I would never, ever hear the end of it at work was scary.

Champions are forged in the fire, legacies cemented by adversity.

It freezes the keeper, doesn't really hit the corners but the keepers still don't get close to them.

As I’ve said before on this forum the best penalty taker in the world now and probably ever - Ivan Toney

Nar, that’s definitely the dumb feck that is Matt Le Tiss sadly.

On Toney, it was pretty incredible timing as I questioned the other day how many huge pressure ones he’s taken and tonight he actually pissed it. Fair play.

I mean today, his first cap for England, the richest game in the world, the play off semi-final etc plenty of high pressure pens tbf :)

I used to do it. On a grander stage too. The only pen I ever missed I looked at the ball. Lesson learned.

Yes Gaizka Mendieta made a career out of it (in fairness he was a pretty good player).

It's a bit different from Toney and Muller though since both don't look at the ball at all during the run up as well. For Mendieta it seems he's looking at the ball during the run up but then looks at the keeper when kicking.

I think that's fair enough on most of them. Mendieta was well known for watching the keeper at the moment of connecting with the ball to make sure he placed it in the opposite/different direction but on a few of them yes he is looking at the ball until the moment of impact, it tended to vary according to my recollection.
