Every week we seem to see new proposed 'swap' deals suggested, be it Carrick & cash for Modric or as caughtoffside (I know!) today report, Berbatov for De Rossi, but in reality how popular are these deals when it comes to top players?

The only one I can recall right now is Cole to Chelsea for Gallas plus cash, I'm sure there are probably others but they dont spring to mind. The fact is, I'd imagine that there are far too many circumstances that need to be lined up in order for these 'swap' deals to be appealing.

Yet rumour sites and tabloids push these stories relentlessly, proof if ever was needed that in the main, they simply cater to the gossip and drama hungry muppet.

So, what are the ones that happened and what are the most outlandish rumours you've heard.

The Eto'o-Ibrahimovic swap is another, but you're right, they're very rare really.

Unless you count Gillespie plus cash for Cole...

There's still the Eto'o-Ibrahimovic deal but yeah, I agree, the number of rumours in the press about swap deals compared to how rare they are is ridiculous.

Ah yeah that was the other one I was trying to think of.

Ive thought this before too. They barely ever happen. Whenever I see swap mentioned I instantly disregard.

But I do recall one funny one. Blackburn paid Southampton £5m + a young James Beattie for Kevin Davies.

Davies was a disaster at BBurn and Beattie went on to have a couple of cracking seasons at Southampton

Carew for Baros (Villa and Lyon) is probably the only straight swap I can remember.

Well Ireland and Dunne arrived at Aston Villa as part of the deals City made for Barry and Milner, IIRC.

But yeah, I never trust these rumours, I trust them less if they come from caughtoffside and/or goal.com and those pieces of shit.

Roma can feck off with their over-rater De Rossi, why the hell would we part ways with our mercurial Bulgarian ?

United have done a few.

Gillespie plus cash for Cole
Pugh plus cash for Smith
McShane, Steele plus cash for Kuszczak

I'd personally prefer to receive a young player or two along with a lesser cash amount if selling off a star player. Especially if I could land a prized starlet from the other club.

Fact of the day. Fergie wanted to re sign Gillespie in the summer of 95 because he felt Beckham was better suited to center midfield.

You ain't going to get one of those in a swap deal unless you give them one of ours:lol:
The Gillespie-Andy Cole was always going to work out better for us IMO though at the time so many observers seemed to think Gillespie was the better option

I'm speaking more from a selling club's stand point not a club like Barca, Real, etc.

If United wanted say Rodwell... I'd be inclined to put two offers to United... one you pay full cash... or two, take a few million off the cash amount and give us a player in return with cash. A player like Gibson than can go straight into the first team, or perhaps a younger prospect like Pogba or Tunnicliffe. The selling club often holds the cards.

North American sports rarely do cash deals now days. It's basically trades involving players, sometimes for salary cap purposes. But it's easier to do trades when it's one domestic league versus a continental thing.

Yeah I dont really mean young players though, most of those players (certinaly Pugh and McShane anyway) were just youth players for Utd who would've been sold on for a small fee anyway.

I more mean first teamers (who make dramatic transfer stories).

Charles N'Zogbia and Ryan Taylor.

Which all came about after Kinnear, called N'Zogbia.....Insomnia
