Can't find this elsewhere.

Basically I'm looking to get a 5.1 sound system set up, but there's one thing I'm unsure of. My late uncle had a sony set up that would provide surround sound for whatever he was watching (tv/dvd/vcr), which I loved. A few years ago I got my own system, but it would only work with the dvd player that came with it (ie, it wouldn't put anything else into surround sound). If was buying a surround system now, what would I have to buy to get a set up like my uncles, with everything I watch in surround sound?

You should be fine, the surround sound will work with everything.

I'm not sure about the details of my uncles set up, but the shit one I had was dvd to tv via a scart, and dvd to amp/woofer via 5 sets of rca cables.

Our surround system is 6-7 years old and it just a function button to change the input. Maybe you set it up incorrectly. What audio outputs do you have on your current player at the back.

So the VCR and TV was not plugged into the amplifier? That's your answer.

From what I can remember it didn't have any other inputs for my tv. It's stopped working and been thrown out since. Would new ones have the necessary imputs?

As long as you have an input source to your system then it should be fine.
I have a reasonably cheap 5.1 samsung system that has stereo rca and SPDIF inputs and it works perfectly with my TV outputting through SPDIF and all 5 sources being inputted to my TV.
