Surely ETH will not work with our current full backs?

From all of the articles and hints of where we'll strengthen - there is no mention of full back.

Dalot, AWB are particularly atrocious with the ball. Telles obviously isn't good enough and Shaw I feel struggles with intricate instructions. Do we really think ETH is going to point to any of them and say "yeah, I think they'll adapt to my system"?

Could we see Alvaro Fernandez + Laird make the step up?

Aside from Shaw who lacks intensity himself, our fullbacks are awful. We should get rid of two out of awb, telles and dalot. Telles for me is just woeful.

sell telles, sell dalot. Give hime time to work with AWB, Laird, Williams, Fernandez.
AWB will probably struggle with his system but if he can improve a bit, we can sell for a good fee.

I said in some other thread we have the worst footballers at the full back positions. And you cant play modern football with such terrible footballers

Shaw is one of the most naturally gifted left backs in the world. He is potentially one of the biggest beneficiaries of a proper system and coaching set-up in our team. Of course, he could also end up completely failing in which case it'll be time to get rid, but the hope is that ETH will get him back to last seasons form and stay there.

The others though - Telles and AWB definitely have no place long-term. Dalot is the only one with a very small chance, but ETH will have to work miracles. Almost certainly none of them will be the answer.

Telles was astonishingly bad today. I don't think he has any redeeming features in the PL. That's been my view from the first time I've seen him until now. He's not a good enough athlete and lacks defensive nous. You need pace and an engine at full back in this league, he's totally unsuitable. Criminal scouting to get that so wrong.

Dalot did okay at times, unlucky not to score. His overall stint in the team has been mediocre, though.

I think the AWB ship has sailed.

Shaw I have no idea, I just don't think he's got it in him to be a top player. Seems to lack the intensity and personality to put consistent seasons together. But he's probably the least of our worries.

Probably not, maybe ahaw can redeem himself?
I'm looking forward to this timber guy.

Wan-Bissaka and Shaw were good enough to start on a team that finished 2nd in the league. Shaw can great on his day and Wan-Bissaka has redeeming qualities that he can improve with good coaching. Dalot and Telles are terrible and need replacing.

Some suggesting maybe Shaw

If ETH persists with any of the older players - he'll end up with the same fate as all the other managers that has gone, simple as that.

Shaw will get another season as not as dreadful but rb is a must fix

Luke shaw yes but we could do with a good right back. Awb and telles should be sold, dalot should be back up.

do wish we would of got trippier when he wanted to come.

Shaw should get another season in out current circumstances. He was the best alb in europe last season. Ethan Laird should be thrown in and the two from Porto should be moved on.

I'm strangely confident Shaw will do well for Hag more so than I am with most of our players. He's technically a good all-rounder , its just his form has fell off a cliff.

The right back situation is a major concern though. Oh boy, AWB and Dalot are varying degree's of bad.

Laird would be ideal for his system, Fernandez is too slow off the mark to make it as a left back in my opinion. I don't see ETH having 2 very inexperienced fullbacks integrated into the team at the same time.

I wouldn't say that Dalot is awful at the ball but he's certainly not good enough overall to be a starter for a team with any serious aspirations.
Shaw is the only one who has the talent but he's been here for too long to have a realistic chance for a proper redemption, although weirder stuff have happened in football.

Ideally I think we'd sign one all-rounder and be left with him, Shaw, Dalot, Laird & Fernandez with the latter too getting lots of chances. Well, not ideally but in a realistically good scenario — we have so many weaknesses that we have to fix.

This question pretty much applies to 90% of our first team squad.
Don't forget the midfield.
Thing is in the midfield you can see certain players which can be retrained or instructed to be part of an integral cog in his system. Fred's pressing can be useful, Garner returning from loan, Mejbri on the horizon and McTominay having a better floor then his full backs relatively make me think we should really focus on improving LB/RB.

The trouble is we can't replace everyone this summer. I can't see ETH going out of his way to replace all of our fullbacks when the rest of the team requires upgrading first. We need replacements for Ronaldo and Greenwood, 2 central mids and a central defender.

Shaw is fine at LB and we can probably make do with AWB or an academy graduate next season. Dalot and Telles can be shipped out tomorrow though.

Shaw can be useful if he can sort his fitness issues but the others are no exaggeration barely Championship standard. I'll have no hope for next season if they are looking like regular starters.

Idealy you need both to be functional and more importantly for midfield not to give the ball away easily, I still see this with the current ones because they lack control and passing. But yeah I agree the FB situation is just really bad that we cant do anything other than to look for better options outside the club. It's hard find a very good one as well and they will be expensive.

Dalot lacks the basic fundamentals to be an effective defender. He's slow to react, often caught flat-footed, hasn't learned to force attackers to the byline and his positional sense is frankly non-existent. I can't stay in line with the central defenders for love nor money. I legit believe he is the worst right-back we've ever had at the club.

Telles was a top fullback in days gone by, but he hasn't shown us anything close to his old form since he arrived.

He’ll be forced to work with Shaw who’ll be on his 5th manager turning his form into something permanent.

All full backs need replacing eventually.

Not sure how he's going to work with any of the full backs, defenders, midfielders, or attacking players tbh

We don't need another thread on the defence.
