Super League XVII

Like you I thought no one was bothering with a thread at all this year!

Yes mate, very good first half there. Manly definitely looked a bit undercooked but Leeds were good, and Ryan Hall continued to enhance his reputation. You're a Rhinos fan aren't you, Ed?

I am not a Rhinos fan
I just like the game, and if anything have a slight persuasion towards Wigan as they are the only team and stadium I have seen, well I obviously saw their opponents, once Leeds in the away bit

I just like watching the better sides playing each other, the games involving two from Wigan, Warrington, Leeds, Saints (maybe Huddersfield). The other mismatches don't really do it for me as much

EDIT
After a good Leeds start, I think Manly will win it

Yeah terrific game that, and it sounded a cracking atmosphere. Leeds have really turned things around since the last couple of months of last season.

Good win for the Rhinos!

World Club Challenge is meaningless now, untill they start to rotate it again it will mean nothing, I mean teams playing the matches in England at their home stadium every season without the aussies having warm up matches. It's pointless.

I was sure listening to the game that I heard talk of more England vs Australia club games in the offing, with the top four we have, we could get a little 8 team comp going on...alternating between England and Aus

Be good for our young players to get more exposure to top class rugby league

What was the Leeds-Warrington game like yesterday, missed it

Fully deserved win for Leeds, I thought. Warrington defended well but tried to play too adventurously in the conditions, and poor handling let them down at times. Decent game but hardly a classic.

Cracking pair of games on Sky this weekend. Wigan v Warrington tonight and St Helens v Leeds on Sunday. The season's about to take off in earnest.

Yeh, I don't get to see as many games as I would like at the moment
But tonight's in particular is one I don't want to miss, the second looks like a Leeds win, Saints are half the team without Graham - what a player

Absolutely brilliant game tonight; brutal yet skillful, and played at a breath-taking pace. A few years ago, Warrington used to lose the very close games, but these days under Tony Smith's tutelage they usually shade them.

Good to see Giggsy and Carrick in the crowd, as well as Stuart Pearce. I imagine they experience a bit of embarrassment when they watch the rugby lads play through the pain when they see so much play-acting going on in their own game.

Awful from Warrington tonight, some of the offloads were beyond stupid in the positions they were attempted. Saints were pretty outstanding in the first 25 minutes though, and should have won by a greater margin.

Didn't see that half coming

You must have missed our previous matches this year then! That sort of slapping has been on the cards all season with our inability to start games on the front foot and awesome ability to drop the ball every other set(tonight we took it to to even lower depths by dropping it pretty much every set).

You can't play like we've been playing and expect to keep winning, Wigan should have done a job on us last week, they were better in every aspect of the game except the scoreboard. A hungry Saints with new-coach syndrome were never going to let us off the hook if we continued our form, sadly we did.

There's something not right about Wire this year, maybe just too many players out of form, can't get over the dissapointing end to last season, ageing side past it's peak, playing within ourselves after last years experience(I hope this), whatever it is, we need to get it sorted ASAP because that was humiliating tonight, the scoreline flattered us because Saints hitting 40-50 would sum up our performance a lot better than 16-28.

You are right, only seen a little of last week's game of Warrington

Some scoreline for Catalan tonight, 76-6 vs Widnes

Anyone catch much of the Magic Weekend?

Yeah, watched the Warrington - Widnes game, the Hull derby and Saints v Wigan; all three were pretty entertaining. I was surprised there were over 63,000 there over the two days as the crowds looked a bit sparse at every single game. Presumably a lot of people only watched their own team and didn't bother to take in the other matches, which is a bit of a shame.

What about you Ed?

Wigan looked good last night
As do Saints tonight

What's the format from here on in?

Looks like Catalans vs Leeds, and Warrington vs Hull/Huddersfield

And then Wigan get first pick of the winners of that

Is that right?

Sounds about right but they seem to change it every year, the RFL & Sky are really fecking up the sport & league winners should be leage winners with the top 8 competing for the Premiership after it which was always a great competition to win.

Should be two great games with Wigan picking one of Leeds/Warrington, and the other facing Saints

The clear four best teams in the competition.

Not sure who I'd pick if I was Wane, probably Leeds, but it's not a choice you'd be happy to make

It seems picking Leeds motivated them for the win again as it did against us last year, think I'd rather finish 2nd than have the pick.

Surely Warrington's to lose now?

Yeh. Expect Warrington to lose - but how many times have people expected teams to beat Leeds. They just get it done

Wigan just didn't get going in the first half, even a slightly improved first half and they would have beaten Leeds

as much as I hate Leeds and i really do hate them seeing them win was pleasing tonight, certainly the lesser of two evils and always great to see Wanky Warrington lose
