Sunderland to seal Dong deal | Sky Sports | Football | Premier League | News

Sunderland are set to sign South Korea international Ji Dong-won.

According to reports in the Far East, Chunnam Dragons have reached an agreement with Sunderland for the 20 year-old and he could be making his last K-League appearance on June 26.

The disclosed transfer fee is in the region of £625,000 to £800,000 and Ji is understood to have come to terms with a three-year deal worth £1.5 million.

"I hope to survive in the English Premier League as long as I can play like Park Ji-sung and I also want to be the ace of the team like Lee Chung-yong," an excited Ji was quoted as saying on The Korea Times.

The talented forward is a product of Chunnam's youth program and scored eight goals in 26 matches in his debut season last year.

The K-League outfit are disappointed at losing their starlet but admitted they had little choice but to let him go.

"It is a great loss for us to lose him after having him only for one season and after spending many years to train him," a club spokesperson said.

"If he returns to the K-League, he must return to the Chunnam Dragons."

Ji will join Sunderland's pre-season camp early next month and is expected to feature in the club's friendly games before the new campaign starts.

Any excuse to post this.

I think Fergie has signed Ashley Young because he has seen glimpses of Dong in videos of him.

Of course he said that. If anybody is really still under the impression that we bought Dong for anything other then to sell United in China, you're kidding yourself. Fergie says that, millions buy Dong and Manchster United merchandise.

Did Fergie actually say that?

Yes. Sometimes he makes me wonder if he actually sees the player themselves or just talk based on what someone told him or from watching compilations.
I tracked that preseason so careful to watch Dong and all I saw was dang.

He must have downed an extra bottle of plonk when he made that comparison then.

Ignorance is bliss. When we bought Dong he was a teenager and one of the brightest talents out of Asia. We had issues with his visa so loaned him out to a Belgium second division club where he was stuck for three years. While there he did all that he could, scoring goals for fun. Finally gets here and it doesn't work out.

Do you have any idea how different China is to Europe? To take a young kid, pull him from his roots and toss him into Belgium's second division is career suicide for anyone. How was he supposed to develop while playing there? It was namely unfortunate circumstances that stunted his playing growth spectacularly, but when we did buy him, he was a very up and coming Asian player.

So youre saying if he left china and went straight to united he would have been the next batistuta?

Dong
Richardson
Bardsley
O'Shea
Brown
Campbell
Gibson

This could be great if it all works out for them... now go sign the Djemba twins... please.

I'm saying if he was trained by United's youth coaches like he should of, he'd of been a lot better off. How would Rooney of done as a teen in Belgium's second division?

He's no where close to Rooney but he'd of gotten to Alan Smith's level.

Thats a fair point man, but the Chinese League is not a place where u'd look for talented players. United just went for best they could to target the Chinese market!

Wishful thinking. Had rooney gone to belgium development would have stalled, but when he got to united he would have still started to improve and progress to a decent standard.

Its clear Dong didnt have "it." He was signed to sell shirts, sell shirts he probably did.
