Sunderland cry foul as United intensify pursuit of Bellion
By George Caulkin

BOB MURRAY, the Sunderland chairman, last night accused Manchester United of “despicable, shabby and arrogant” behaviour and having “broken every rule in the book, whether written or ethical”, over their pursuit of David Bellion, the French forward. Sunderland have reported United to the FA Premier League over their approach for Bellion, which Murray said has “totally, mentally and physically” unsettled the player.
Bellion, who was signed by Peter Reid on a free transfer from Cannes in the summer of 2001, falls out of contract at the end of this season but has refused offers of a new three-year deal and a pay rise of 500 per cent.

Sunderland claim to have evidence of an illegal approach through Bellion’s representative, Mike Morris. Sunderland paid Morris £200,000 in agency fees when Bellion arrived from Cannes two years ago and he has continued to represent the player.

Peter Kenyon, the United chief executive, officially made contact with Murray at the beginning of December about the possibility of signing Bellion at the end of the season, when — because he joined the Wearsiders as a teenager — any prospective transfer would go before a tribunal. Sunderland have also had firm inquiries about Bellion from Arsenal and Liverpool.

At that point, Murray said, “David’s attitude changed”. He has not played for the club since their 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion on December 21 and has suffered from “mystery” injuries, including to his heel and hamstring. “The doctors couldn’t find anything on the scans,” Murray said and Bellion was subsequently sent to the National Sports Centre at Lilleshall to discover the extent of the problems.

“He (Bellion) was picked up by his agent’s driver last Thursday, taken to Luton airport and flown back to Cannes without permission or prior notice,” Murray said. Bellion has since told Sunderland that his mother is ill, but Murray is convinced that United are not innocent parties in the matter. “The relationship between the two clubs is at an all-time low,” he said. “We’re third from bottom of the Barclaycard Premiership fighting for our lives, United are the biggest club in the world and they pull this one on us. Their behaviour has been despicable.”

“I couldn’t think of how worse to treat a fellow Premiership club. I attempted to speak to United’s plc chairman (Roy Gardner) yesterday to talk about their unprofessional attitude and he never returned my call.

“David Bellion has been left between a rock and a hard place. He’s back in Cannes, the team who gave him a chance in this league want him back because of his great pace and Manchester United just want him on the cheap in a tribunal in the summer. I’ve had a number of conversations with Peter Kenyon and a meeting with him, which has resulted in absolutely nothing happening.”

As a result of the impasse, Kenyon was back in contact with Murray late yesterday in a bid to complete the signing of Bellion immediately. Kenyon offered £500,000 to be paid now and another £500,000 depending on appearances. It was turned down, with Murray pointing to his recent signings of other players of comparable age; Stephen Wright, from Liverpool, for £3 million and Matthew Piper, from Leicester City, for £3.5 million.

“With due respect, David Bellion is not going from Leicester to Sunderland, he’s going from Sunderland to Manchester United, the richest club on the planet,” Murray said. “But they want David on the cheap. Why don’t they just do that all the time and close their academy? As it stands, it looks as though we have lost a player for seven months when we’re desperate for him.”

Sunderland would expect a fee of around £5 million for Bellion, but with relegation a distinct possibility, Murray admitted that they “would take him back, because we need him”.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, apparently regards Bellion, whose time at Cannes coincided with Patrick Vieira’s spell at the club, as a young replica of Thierry Henry.

Does something not sound right here? Blaming United for Bellion leaving the team to return home? Bellion has been miserable there for awhile, that is no secret, and he has told Sunderland he wants to go. Sunderland "claim" that United has caused Bellion to be "mentally and physically unsettled". Huh? They won't let him go because for some reason they think that he will help them. He is one player, the whole team is shit, they are going to be relegated to first division, he is injured supposedly and he does not want to be there.Yea that all sounds like United's fault to me.

This chairman is merely using us to try and deflect attention away from himself and his poor running of his club (Howard Wilkinson?). They are in grave danger of going down and he's clutching at straws trying to stem the ill feeling that's being directed at him by the club's own supporters. Sad and pathetic.

Give em' half of what they want and tell em' to feck off... all we need is Bellion.

Time's ticking.

So? We can take him for free in the summer. He won't be the reason we win or don't win silverware this season. Of course, he'd probably benefit from coming ASAP but if we really want him we can wait.

If Sunderland believe they can get £5M, well then they are stupid. He's a player that has done nothing, his contract is due to run out in five or six months and Sunderland has no chance in hell to get him to sign a new contract. They could take the million we're offering or they can let him go for free in the summer whilst paying his wages till then.

I must say I'm starting to really dislike Sunderland. It really started with their anti-football performance at Old Trafford a few weeks ago. Then this. I also believe they have treated Stefan Schwarz, my favourite Swedish footballer, very bad.

There's no point Murray comparing what he paid for Wright with what we're offering for Bellion because (i) the transfer market's gone pear shaped since then and fees have fallen (ii) Bellion's out of contract in the summer and the tribunal isn't going to give them £5m for a 20 year old inexperienced striker. It would be interesting to know specifically what Murray is accusing United of doing that's against the rules. He seems to have got the hump 'cos we're not matching his valuation. Tough.

Possibly, but because he's under 24 years of age, we cannot take him on a Bosman for free. It's to protect clubs from losing young players and IMO a good thing.

Having said that, it's not like he's Sunderlands Star player, and he wasn't getting a look in. I mean, they signed Flo and that geezer from Ipswich when they could have given him more game time.

All in all, it stinks of 'Man United have got loads of cash, what do they care if we want 5 million'

Seeing as we're not absolutely desparate, I say we tell them we're gonna wait till the summer. Watch them drop the price to about 2 million plus incentives for appearances/ performances then.

Although he's under 24 if he's out of contract Sunderland will not really be protected at all as he can move if he agrees to with the fee then being set by tribunal.

Wait but didnt Sunderland nab him for free from Cannes in the first place, so how on earth they expect 5mill when he is almost out of contract is just ridiculous.

This kind of story makes me ashamed of the club.

United (and, sadly, Fergie) don't play fair on transfers. Personally, this is one of the sides of being a United fan that makes me sad (the other is our commercialism).

Why? I think Gary Lifo summed it up perfectly.

So it makes you sad we´re no charity?

Is anyone really sure that Bellion is that potential 4th star striker we need as cover. I I think the real reason the board are haggling over his price is due to the fact he's regarded as a bit of a gamble.

1: He hasn't set either the french or english leagues alight.

2: He's left his contracted club who happen to be scrapping for premier league status just so he can have a holiday before he moves clubs.

Are these traits us fans would welcome at the theatre of dreams? I guess you just have to trust Fergie's judgement, but if were are to stay as one of the top clubs in the world we in my opinion still need a striker as cover for Ruud.

feck 'em and their poxy club, give 'em £2m and no more, they know we'll get him for less in the Summer.

I don't see anything in this story that is outside the rules. I just see Sunderland moaning that we won't pay £5m for a 20 year old who is out of contract in the summer. Because he's out of contract he's allowed to talk to whoever he wants. He appears to be talking to us, Arse & the Scousers. It's not our fault if he's decided to piss off to France. Maybe his mother is ill!

Interesting response from United on this Bellion thing...the most interesting part being the quote below:

"A club statement said: "We formally contacted Sunderland in December on the basis that David Bellion was going to be out of contract this summer and with the intention of establishing whether we could reach agreement with the club on a deal for the end of the season."

A deal at the end of the season? Does that mean Bellion is the one Fergie really wants or, hopefully I'm wrong, does that mean he's bringing in 2 strikers in the summer and we're going to lose one of our current strikers?

naw i think we will get 2 strikers in the summer but not off-load one. bellion will be snapped up, but wont play in the first team much, as he's very raw, great talent and amazing future ahead of him, but very raw. Theyl stick him in the reserves for a few weeks/months and play him occasinally i would think

IS HE THE ONLY PLAYER EVER TO BE COMING TO THE END OF HIS CONTRACT?

NO.

ARE WE THE ONLY CLUB EVER TO TRY TO SIGN PLAYERS IN THIS MANNER?

NO.

DOES IT STINK OF WE HATE Man Utd SYNDROM?

YES.

Its a dream for any young player to join United, of course he is unhappy, imagine missing out on such an oppurtunity.

What is a fair price, what is the demand for Bellion- how much money are the 'firmly interested' Arsenal and Liverpool putting on the table?

you go to safeway, buy the same item as say, David Beckham, does he have to pay 10 times (or 100) more because he is 10/100 times richer than you?? It makes me sick, lowly clubs turn thier jealousy into money making tool!! Many players want to join our club, and it's our fault?!!!!!!

Fair comment - all players have a human right to decide their futures... contracts are their to be negotiated.

A little gift to Sunderland FC

Now, Bellion's representative is saying that he wants to return to France at the end of his contract. Apparently, if he goes back to France the fee would only be around £120,000 for his new club. Could be a negotiating ploy to try to put pressure on Sunderland to sell him now though.
