There's been plenty of talk lately of how much more fun and active the newbie forums are compared to the mains.

If I understand this correctly, the reason we have newbie forums is basically to keep mayfly trolls out of the main football forums to troll over the latest result, transfer, whatever, before getting banned.

Were there ever any problem with the non-football forums being plagued by this phenomenon though? If not, wouldn't it make good sense to merge the non-football forums to get activity in the mains back to old levels? I also kind of like the idea of a meeting ground between noobs and rubber-stamped posters.

It won't happen

The powers that be are happy with the current system

It wouldn't ever happen B9, and the wums love the General just as much. You would have people signing up non-stop, and wumming the hell out of that forum, and remember the Newbie forum isn't visible, so anything they post down there is internal and seen only by us and them. They would sign up and the General, which is already heavily monitered as a consequence to Google's new policy, means it would require round the clock moderation, and major concerns for Niall. In short, I'll say you can discuss it, but it will never, ever happen. The newbies serves a specific purpose, and it's working in that aspect. At the moment, we have to deal with wums purely in a forum that doesn't affect anything else, this way would mean so much more work, and the fear that posters could be misusing the General very easily, which isn't worth the risk.

What about a Forum that is invisible to guests and google spiders but visible to both Newbie and Promoted posters?

That's the best of both worlds isn't it? We get to socialise with the lower classes, they get to meet and greet their heroes and all the while Google has no idea about it.

Maybe have an intermediary forum that can be viewed by all, but only mains posters and people with say 250 posts+ can post. If that'd be possible it might be a good way to vet the good/bad non-mains posters (since it must be quite a task for mods alone). The bad with 250+ would possibly be banned quicker and the good with 250+ might be promoted quicker, leading to more activity in the mains.

The mods would also see the people spamming up the newbies to achieve the 250 posts and be able to ban before it spoiled the intermediary section.

Just a thought.

From my limited experience with off-the-shelf bulletin board admin, I don't think there is any provision for a user's post count when it comes to setting permissions. Nice idea though.

Every year there's always people who notice a lull in activity, only for it to get back to normal without changing anything and then everyone forgets it... it'll be fine. And what's with this mild obsession with the newbies? Chances are they'll end up getting promoted at some point anyway.

I love it as it is, only problems is there's not much activity in the Manchester United forum (ironically) compared to other subforum such as footies, general, even entertainment.

Empower some senior poster to help scout for good / clean newbie to promote I say, some level headed non masochist one

I think this is a perfectly good thread to point out that I should be able to see the newbies again...I was fantastic when I was given access. I did that thread on "Man Utd" and another one on something else that was equally good.

Long story short, give me back my privileges you cnuts.

There's not much activity because we're playing well. It's a lot like the news in that respect (they rarely report anything positive).

Wait until something goes tits up.

If these threads from the Newbies are so good that they are being previewed in the mains, why not promote the said posters to full status?

I found my time down 'there' pretty depressing & I don't quite get the fascination...

Edit: Alright, I think you are trying to demonstrate what spastics they are. But we knew that...

Come on now, it's not that bad ffs. I enjoyed it and learned alot down there. some good posters there too inbetween all the drivel. We have drivel here too in the mains, but not to the same extent obviously.

In saying that, I still think the current setup is good and not to be changed.
