We may not be as badly off as we thought.

Ruud and Ole
Ruud and Diego
Diego and Ole
Scholes and Ole
Giggs and Ruud
Giggs and Ole

Giggs has played well behind both Ole and Ruud. Diego I think would do well just behind Ruud, and I think Scholes suits that role better behind Ole than Ruud - they seemed to link very well tonight. When Scholesy has played with Ruud, it invariably hasn't worked, but he looked good in that role tonight, and he and Ole seem to have a good understanding. The lack of height would be a concern admittedly.

Fergie said recently tht hes going to play Scoles up front a lot more.
He said something like "hell be a great striker, he just needs to believe it". He had one of his better performance sin the 451 tonight, fingers crossed hell be more confident in the role in future.

I thought Scholes played the 'hole' role fantastically well tonight. As i've always said, he's more than got the ability to fulfill what's needed yet people continue to ignore this basing their opinons on his ineffective performances there last season, which in all honesty were mostly down to bad form.

It was 4-4-2 tonight ;)

But Scholes definitely played slightly behind.

Scholes played excellently tonight. In his early seasons he frequently played as second striker so I'm sure he'll continue to do well up front, in the hole etc.

From Livvie's selections at the top, I think Ruud and Ole beats any other permutation we can field, with Ruud/Giggsy as second option for a tricky EC away game. The advantage if we can get Scholesy also performing consistently well in support of Ruud or Ole is that we don't lose the threat down the left flank that Giggsy always brings.

Diego has looked happiest (occasionally !) when he has been on the field with Ole as a second main striker. He needs to get some goals behind him and his confidence levels up before we can reasonably expect him to lead the attack. I'd really like to see him given 90mins as second striker to Ruud or Ole in one of the next few premiership games.....give him a chance in a formation which is otherwise going to function and then we may see what he can really do. Each time he comes on for 15 minutes you know that the game will already have passed him by.

Wouldn't agree, nor did the commentators and analysts.

Well I heard one of them say that next time Scholes claims he can't perform that role, Fergie will take him aside and show him a video of tonight's game.

Normally when he plays the hole role, he's been more in midfield. Today he spent a lot of time right up against the defence, and was often level with Ole in their moves. Certainly the most up front I've seen him play.

Imagine Ruud out for a long time with injury, wouldn't say we got that many deadly options... :(

DOn't agree really. Ruud and / or Ole have to work at the creative side. They're really best at banging in the goals. I think a natural creator like Scholes or Giggs is the best partner for Ruud or Ole. Scholes has be great when fit. Witness tonight...

Paying attention to detail tonight, I don't think I've seen Ole play as much with his back to goal. Ruud doesn't - so maybe this is why Scholes and Ole seem more successful.

Ole almost played a Mark Hughes part tonight.

Livvie, cudn't see the match as it was not on the box, but from what you've described, Ole played as a targetman last night & was a sort of sole striker - how was his performance in that role then? :)

Livvie COULD see the match, unless she's a clairvoyant and can tell how each player played without turning on her TV

;)

I think we can thank Quiroz for Scholesys change. For too long Paul was still playing as a midfielder. Now he plays like a striker, like how he used to. And his instincts are second to none.

Welcome back Scholes. That link up role is what MAKES Man Utd.

Fergie's vision for last year is coming true this year hopefully ^^.

I didn't see this match. How do you rate Scholes and Veron's performance? Do you think Scholes should really turn into a striker, even if that means we may lose some of his quality in midfield, such as tackling and long passes?

I can't believe I am saying this but you are spot oN, Andy Townsend said this on ITV

Admittedly I am not the biggest fan of the Neveille bros, but certainly tonight I have to state that Gaz's return defintely was beneficial to Becks. Beckham seemed more in control tonight than he has done during Gary's absence. Their understanding down the flank is something Beckham has not been able to reciprocate with the various deputies there has been in his absence.

I've got to wait for Saturday afternoon to see the match on ESPN........... :( :( :(

I havent seen the game yet and from all accounts Scholes did well in the hole but im not convinced, i personally think its a waste of Scholseys talents playing him there, he should be in the centre of midfield with a new striker playing in the hole.

Kinky Melinky,

I wrote " Livvie, cudn't see the match as it was not on the box, but from what you've described, Ole played as a targetman last night & was a sort of sole striker - how was his performance in that role then? "

Notice the comma after 'Livvie'?

Trying to make fun of my English just because it's not my Mother Tongue?

:D :D

But seriously Kinky, how did Ole play last night? :)
