A statue of Manchester United legend Jimmy Murphy will be unveiled outside the Stretford End at Old Trafford on 3 May 2023 - 65 years to the day since he led the Reds to the FA Cup final at Wembley.

The club announced in May 2021 that it was planning a statue to celebrate Jimmy’s immense contribution at Old Trafford after discussions with a coalition of United supporters and the Murphy family.

The coalition, led by Pat Burns, chair of the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation, representatives of the Murphy family and the club, visited Edinburgh in November to check on the progress of the statue, which is being created by sculptor Alan Herriot.

Herriot was appointed to design and develop the statue after consultation between the club and the fan coalition.

Herriot, a lifelong Manchester United supporter, recently produced the impressive statue of club legend Denis Law, which now stands in Aberdeen.

Collette Roche, chief operating officer of Manchester United, said: “Jimmy Murphy was one of the most important figures in the history of this great club. He was not only Sir Matt Busby’s chief coach and then assistant for 25 years, but, perhaps most importantly, led us out of the darkest period in our history.

“In those terrible days after the Munich tragedy, Jimmy was the man who held this club together and built a team that reached the FA Cup final. No matter the result, it was a remarkable achievement to even be at Wembley – something that, on 6 February 1958, seemed inconceivable.

“It is fitting that this wonderful statue should be unveiled on 3 May, the date of that final against Bolton Wanderers and at the Stretford End, overlooking the land where Jimmy used to train the Busby Babes. It will add to existing statues of Sir Matt Busby, Sir Alex Ferguson, and the 'United Trinity' of Sir Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law, outside Old Trafford.”

Burns said: “I was moved when saw the statue and there is no doubt that Alan has done a fantastic job in capturing the passion and image of one of the backroom legends at Old Trafford. I know the Murphy family, who joined us on the trip to Scotland, were also hugely impressed with the progress.

“It will be a special occasion on 3 May when we finally unveil the statue marking Jimmy’s extraordinary contribution to United at the most tragic time in this club’s history.”

Jimmy, who also coached Wales on their only other appearance at a World Cup, in Sweden in 1958, played a crucial role as a coach and later assistant manager to Busby between 1946 and 1971.

The Welshman was integral in the development of the Busby Babes, including Sir Bobby Charlton and Duncan Edwards, and was crucial in the club’s recovery after the Munich Air Disaster. The club agreed that Murphy’s important contribution to the rebuilding of United after Munich deserved a permanent tribute at Old Trafford.

Various potential locations for the statue were suggested but it was agreed, following consultation, that the tribute will be situated outside the Stretford End, close to the area where Jimmy used to coach the Busby Babes on a training pitch made of ash cinders.

As we come close to the completion of the statue, the club would like to place on record, once again, its thanks to the family of Jimmy and the coalition of United supporters’ groups who have helped develop this important project.

More information regarding how to attend and be part of this important moment in the club’s history will be available soon.

Fantastic news.

That's great - very well deserved honour for someone who contributed so much to the club, even without considering him keeping it together during its darkest hour.

It's only right somebody so significant in our history is celebrated and remembered.

Good move by the club.

The event, which takes place two weeks today at the Theatre of Dreams, is open to fans and the public to attend from 16:30 BST, with the official unveiling ceremony taking place between 17:00 and 17:30.

The occasion will be compered by Alan Keegan and will feature words from the club and the Murphy family before the statue is unveiled and seen for the first time by United fans.

The event will take place outside the Stretford End, where an area for fans to congregate will be signposted. Complimentary soft drinks will also be distributed to those attending.

For those arriving on foot from Sir Matt Busby Way can access via either the Munich or United Road tunnels; parking will be available in E1 car park off Wharfside Way (enter via gate E2 where you will receive instructions).

A fitting tribute.

I share the same surname as him and I understand his father was from the same part of Ireland as me before emigrating to Wales, so I'd like to think I'm related to him somewhere down the line! Would be amazing to have some kind of link to United history, no matter how tenuous.

The problem is Murphys are 10 a penny in my neck of the woods, might just as likely be related to Matt Busby as Jimmy!

A fitting tribute to a man who toiled away in the shadow of Sir Matt, but who left an indelible mark on United. Not only was Murphy's commitment and effort in holding the club and everyone in it together in the aftermath of Munich, perhaps his finest hour, he also was a moving light in the development of young players.

Although the team(s) of that era became known as the 'Busby Babes' because of Sir Matt's overall leadership and belief in the younger players, but it was Jimmy Murphy who had charge of them on a day to day basis and who forged the bonds between his young charges.

Its taken some time, but at last some lasting recognition for a great servant of the club.

I mean it’s not as classy as those blue thingies in front of Etihad.

Why didn’t they unveil that on a weekend or match day? Seems a bit anticlimactic doing it with nobody around

Also why is he hunchbacked?

There was probably a fair few fans at the event.

Great to see that he'll be a permanent part of Old Trafford. It can't be understated how much he did for the club after Munich.

“We listened and agreed with them [fan groups],” said Richard Arnold, Manchester United chief executive, in a speech before the unveiling. “It is wonderfully fitting that the statue stands at the Stretford End of Old Trafford, overlooking the old ash-cinder pitches where Jimmy would train the Babes. A special place, on a special day, for a special person in Manchester United’s history.”

Jimmy’s son, Jim Jnr, spoke on behalf of the Murphy family, saying: “This is an extremely proud moment for all the family. We have always cherished our father's contribution to Manchester United, but this wonderful statue is further confirmation of his remarkable legacy at Old Trafford.

“We thank everyone involved at Manchester United for this great tribute and I know that, like us, Dad would have been touched to see so many people here celebrating his 43 years at the club.

“Dad always said that if he could stay at Old Trafford he would – that has come true today.”

Award-winning sculptor Alan Herriot, who was commissioned by the club and the fan coalition in March 2022, said: “As a lifelong Manchester United fan this was a dream job for me. In my time working on the statue, I got to know Jimmy's family and the fans incredibly well. They assisted me at every stage in the creation of what you see at Old Trafford today.

“I thank them and hope I have done them and their father's memory proud.”

One of the more visually authentic statues I've seen at a football ground. Great job. Fitting for such a great man.

That's really nice. Done a really good job. Is it the same guy who did the other three? Looks like he's back to his Busby-era form.

Great statue for a great man, absolutely deserved. Really can't be understated his impact on the club or how he kept United as a whole going after Munich.
