Strength in depth - is it or is it not true?

I don't know what your title means.

If you mean you want to discuss whether our strength in depth is enough or not, then I don't think we need to discuss it at all. With only two established top class strikers in the team, no one can convince me that our strength at the front has enough depth.

It's basically a topic to discuss our whether we do have strength in depth or not - and not just from the striker viewpoint.

I think that in general we have strength in depth in all other departments except the front line.

We're two players away from having a VERY good squad; a striker and a left back.

In all other areas we're well covered with quality players:

Goalies:
Barthez, Carroll, Ricardo

RB:
Gary Neville, Brown, O'Shea, Phil Neville

LB:
Silvestre, Phil Neville

CB:
Rio, Blanc, O'Shea, Brown

Midfield:
Beckham, Keano, Butt, Veron, Scholes, Giggs, Phil Neville, Forlan

Strikers:
Ruud, Ole, Forlan, Giggs, Scholes

Add to this reserves like Fortune, Chadwick and Stewart, and youngsters like Richardson, Tierney, Lynch, Timm, Davis and Nardiello

And last, but not least, Superstar ;)

I think your first team is strong and capable to compete with any of the best but you dont have quality depth. I would rate your fringe squad players as being average. Liverpool only have a good side not really capable of beating Real and Milan but the fringe players like barros diouf traore cheyrou are all of good quality and are capable of doing the same job as the players who go out of the team. I think you always field your best side in Europe hence your progression to the next round but in the league the fringe players get a run which costs you games!!!

Agree with AEBM...some v good youth promise atm too it seems...despite poor show aginst m/haifa

And if JOS/P Neville and Wes were all injured or unavailable at the same time then our defence looks even weaker. All due respect but Blanc and Silvestre wouldn't get into the side of any of our rivals and yet they are deemed good enough to be regulars in ours, somthing is wrong there.

Silvestre? I rate him at least as good, if not better than Riise.

You know, you really should put the ;) sign next to comments like that or people will thnk you are serious!

Your squad is lacking serious depth. Most other teams have been without 3/4 players and still coped, but the first time you are without that, you struggle. You back 4 are really thin, front line thin, and the back up to midfield is non existant. the fact you had to play your left back and CM (p neville) demonstrated the depth.

Frankly, the youth sucks there too. most teams are blooding players 18-22 age group, but you can't because they are not good enough. Other than O'shea, who from the emerging talent would you trust in the first team?

Gerard Houllier rated him higher than Riise in 99/0 when he tried to sign him but we beat him to it. <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" /> couldnt be wrong could he

You look at Arsenal's bench last night, and i'd hardly call it a quality bench. They were only performing well due to a well-functioning unit.

I'd say we have a good squad, but it could do with boosting as is the case with 99.99% of other teams.

I brought this up about two years ago, and to be honest, despite bringing in Ruud, Rio and Veron, Forlan, etc...the issue is more than just team depth. We can bring in as many midfielders, forwards, defenders as we want, and on paper, it adds a huge amount of depth. However, the issue really is whether or not these players are effective in augmenting the actual strength of the squad.
