Just announced on the commentary on Eurosport.

He'd just announced it in the press conference following his loss to Maguire.

Great shame but inevitable. He is to Snooker what Jordan was to Basketball, Pele (Maradona/Messi) to Football and Woods to Golf. Fantastic player, had the pleasure of watching him play against O'Sullivan 4 years ago.

Not surprised either. He's always said he didn't want to have to do the qualifying circuit. He's too proud to slog it out in small tournaments without a chance to win.

Also I imagine it's difficult to motivate yourself against people who will be massively motivated to firstly get to the tournament and secondly beat Stephen Hendry.

He's done it all and bows out before people call for his retirement (take note Giggs  couldn't help myself :D)

Gutted. Shame he couldn't get through to the one table set up in the Crucible, one last time. Such a horrible way for him to finish his career, with the thumping he received tonight.

Guess he still exceeded all expectations this week with his 147 and getting to the quarters though.

Hated him with a passion as a kid but still had massive respect for him. Legend of the game...

Me too, when he was a spotty oik with a bad mullet. Legend of the game though and as Brophs says, signing off with a 147 underlines his class.

He was my favourite snooker player when I was a child. :(

Same, always thought he reminded me of Fergie when I was a kid. I sort of stopped following snooker as I grew older but remember the great matches I saw Hendry primarily play.

Perfect time to retire. He hasn't been getting far in the world's last 5 years or so he's managed to leave on a high completing a 147. I always thought Ronnie would overtake him but I guess he doesn't have that mental side of the game like Steven did.
