UNITED and City are on collision course in a mega-bucks battle for fast rising Cameroon star Stephane Mbia.

The 21-year-old Rennes defensive midfielder, who can also play at right back, is attracting interest across Europe.

But the player, whose value could reach £10m, says that both Manchester clubs have already been in contact.

Mbia has two years left on his contract at the French club but will consider his future at the Stade de la Route de Lorient at the end of the season.

"I'll think at the end of the year if the big offers I'm receiving are still up to date," he said.

"I've had contact from teams in England and Italy. There are contacts with Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and in Spain there is Barcelona as well.

"For the moment I'm not thinking of it and I will stay with Rennes. I'll rely on people like general manager Pierre Dreossi, who knows me and my parents very well. Then it'll be me who takes a decision."

Mbia would fit the bill for both Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson as he mulls over business in the summer.

Ferguson is always seeking to add more youth to United's senior squad and Mbia fits the profile of a young, mobile, athletic and powerful player.

The Reds are well equipped in midfield at present but Paul Scholes is now 33 and the six foot-plus Mbia has the added attraction of being a capable right- back. United are looking to bring a defender in as insurance with Gary Neville only just on the brink of a senior return after 12 months out and Wes Brown's Old Trafford contract saga very much unresolved.

Anyone know anything about this guy?

We don´t need a midfielder. Sure he can also play right back but if we sign a right back I´d prefer us to sign a natural right back not a midfielder who also happens to be able to play right back.

Agree with that. I`d also like Simpson to get a fair shot at the right back spot.

We dont need another RB at the moment. Let Danny Simpson prove he has got what it takes to succeed Gary Neville. Also Wes Brown has shown he can cover that position when needed.

Danny Simpson won't make it, and Brown is going this summer and additionally is a rubbish right back.

we need a right back for the next year

All that based on what?

Simpson has been good when given the chance. Brown has played well for the team on top of the league and with a great goal difference. And he`ll probably end up signing the new contract as well.

too early to tell with simpson, brown is by no means certain to go and he is a very capable right back, especially defensively. If gaz is fit we are certainly not desperate in that position with potentially five people who can play there if you include jos and hargreaves and two who normally play there in neville and simpson.

Stéphane MBIA ETOUNDI is a great athletic player. Very strong and powerful (1m88 tall), he's not the fastest player but has a great work ethic and passes very well. When he plays for Rennes, he mainly plays in as a midfielder but has played as right back and as a stopper.

Is he a defensive attacking player then?
He attacks like a winger. Every time I've seen him used by Cameroon, for example it has been on the right of attack or midfield. I will be very surprised if he is any good defensively if employed at fullback. IMO who looks more for a box to box midfielder than anything else. Which we don't need. Even if he was United quality. Which I'm not sure about

Only seen him play as a cb, wasn't impressed by him.

I wonder how long it's going to take him to be compared to the mighty Djemba twins.

Wonder if fans thought that of Evra... or Arsenal fans felt about Sagna... :smirk: Come to think of it, many fans felt Evra was shit his first 4 months at the club and felt SAF made the wrong choice. Did you?

Of course not I figure you'll reply

Only those who feel the only quality is in the prmier league would think Evra was not good enough. He was rated as one of the best left-backs on the continent for a while, and had very beig clubs after him.

Anyone who thinks Evra wasn't shit in the first few months at United needs their eyes testing. He was awful. He'd admit as much himself. I think it's understandable that people doubted if he was a good signing.

It's true that he had a strong pedigree before that. Thankfully it began to show through.

Sometimes a player can be good, even very good, but not perform to the right level at a club, and therefore prove to be a bad signing. Veron is an obvious example. It's not all about reputation.

Reeks of Djemba*2.

And if simpson was so good, why isn't he even england u21? Ok, i'm not sure. But if Simmo was england u21 consistently i'm sure i would know about it.

For that matter, do any of our youngsters ever make it to England U21 level? Can hardly recall any consistent U21 youngsters that gave the likes of Bentley, Ashton and Young a challenge for a spot in the U21s?

Shawcross (now at Stoke), Heaton and Campbell are all in the current squad.

It looks like United are connected with another right back every week. I guess we're going to price all the possibilities before settling on the best option.

Gotta say if this Mbia guy lacks pace he doesn't look like good option for United at right back. Can't go forward and be caught out through a lack of pace.

Nobody is saying he didn't have a dodgy few months. My point was, he was signed before those performances, and for people to have written him off or to have said he wasn't good enough for United when he was bought is ludicrous. Marcello used Evra and Sagna as an example, and Sagna's been good since he joined, so i was assuming e was referring to the reputation, or lack of, of the players when they joined.

There is only one player in France that United are interested in, and this isn't the guy, watch us sign him now LOL

We don't need a centre back and that's where he's thrived playing in the last year.

Stephane Mbia admits he is hoping to use Marseille as a stepping stone on his way to joining Manchester United.

The Cameroon midfielder has been regularly linked with a move to England in the past, with a host of clubs reported to have expressed an interest.

He remains in France for now, and recently penned a contract extension at Marseille which will keep him at the club until 2014.

Mbia is not planning to stick around at Stade Velodrome for long, though, as he harbours ambitions of one day turning out for one of Europe's most glamorous sides.

"I want to go as high as possible," the 24-year-old told L'Equipe.

"First I want to do well at Marseille, so my performances will one day send me to a club like Manchester United.

"Real Madrid are also an attractive side, but the club of my dreams is Manchester United.

"I feel fine at Marseille for now, but you have to have ambition."

While Mbia is already planning his exit from Marseille, Copenhagen full-back Oscar Wendt is among those hoping he will soon be on his way in.

The Sweden international is among those to have been touted as a possible replacement for Taye Taiwo, who is expected to leave in the summer, and he admits he would welcome a switch to Ligue 1.

"I have read that Marseille are interested in me, but no-one has made direct contact as yet," Wendt said in L'Equipe.

"If they did get in touch, of course I would listen carefully to what they have to say.

"I will only make a decision on my future, though, once we have been eliminated from the Champions League.

"I do want to play in a better league than the one in Denmark.

"I have been here five years and had an amazing time, but now I want to experience a new challenge at a bigger club in a better league.

"Ligue 1 is definitely a possibility."

Set to join QPR. Anyone seen him play recently?

They have signed a lot of players now.

They have exchanged him for Joey Barton, which means they probably don't rate him all that much.

It's madness tbqfh. He is five times the player Joey Barton is; I'm sure there's a back story to this, there has to be!
