This De Vrij kid is a shit hot prospect though to be fair. He'd only just turned twenty years old when he was named Feyenoor's club captain in the summer after two outstanding seasons, the first at right back before before going on in 11/12 to form a central partnership with the then captain Ron Vlaar (now of Aston Villa) in a season in which Feyenoord finished second in the Eredivisie and conceded only thirty-seven goals. It's fair to say that Vrij and Feyenoord in general have this season been missing Vlaar's influence, but nevertheless the achievements of this center half barely out of his teens are well worthy of merit; merit he's duly received with a call up to the national team for whom he came on as a half time substitute during Holland's recent 0-0 draw with Germany, reforming his partnership with Vlaar and replacing veteran Johnny Heitinga for whom he is now providing strong competition with the starting role in the Netherlands defence at stake. His contract is running down at Feyenoord with the player looking for a move to either Spain or the Premier League, so for £5m you've got to say it's worth it punt.
