we have had enough, too few goals is the problem, we have been top scorers for 3 seasons and played 2 strikers,i think even now we should play the basic 4-4-2
with two upfront. one can easily see that whenever ole comes on late in the game with ruud there are lot more chances created.
so to score more we nned to play 2 strikers and as oleand ruud are not in the best of form we should buy someone new.

10 losses over the last 49 league games, 8 of them after starting with a 442 formation, most of em 1:0 losses, ie no goals scored <img src="graemlins/yawn.gif" border="0" alt="[Yawn]" />

Eggsackerly! 4-4-1-1 (4-5-1 (4-4-2 in disguise)) is not the problem.

SAF has stated that 442 is outdated and that very few teams play with that formation. Therefore we are unlikely to see it at least as a starting lineup although he will revert to it and even 343 if we are chasing a game. I think its a pity because its not really the traditional United style and has made our football less attractive recently. However it has made us more difficult to beat and, touching wood, we don't leak goals in the same way we did last year. If you take Rio JOS and Garry as a back three who all have considerable pace, maybe 343 should be tried more often particularly at home. It would certainly be exciting !

So why does no-one bother to explain how come our best run last season - and which hasn't been matched this - was with two out and out strikers and a hatful of goals.

I can explain, it's inexplicable! ;)

It's blinkered, that's what it is.

It might work better with the correct personnel - a withdrawn striker like Teddy. But with the personnel we have, we achieve better performances and better results - generally, not ALL the time, nothing is ever 100% - with two up front and an attacking formation.

How many times do games change in our favour when we bring on a second striker??????

The 4-5-1 gives flexibility, the team can very easily change it's formation without substitutions, and a single substitution can change it into 4-4-2 or 3-5-2/5-3-2 and two substitutions can turn it into 3-4-3/4-3-3. Players can also move around more freely to make us less predictable.

The problem IMO is not the personnel either, it's getting our personnel (lets face it, a lot of them have played together in 4-4-2 formation for years and years) used to playing in this way.

The future is bright, the future is 4-5-1. ;)

I agree with Weaste in that 4-5-1 actually gives more flexibility. The problem IMHO is with how the game is played under this formation.

Giggs and Becks are pushed inside, clogging the middle. No good crosses can come in from the side because there's only RVN out in the front - hence the game HAS to be the way it is. People complain that Becks and Giggs are not playing quality football.. it's only because the formation is restricting them to do what they like.

In the game against Southampton we switched to 3-4-3 and we scored - played more attractively too. but becks was still roaming around the whole field.. he actually got a shot off from the left side! it would have been another terrific goal had it gone in. IMO this formation will ONLY work when they players get used to it.. which i really don't see happening in the league anytime soon.

And hopefully this will not result in both Fergie and the players becoming somewhat confused by the complexity of the various permutations as well as where and when to employ them to best advantage !!
