Start of the National League in gaelic football

Enjoy it thoward......because come the real matches, you boys will be found wanting again.

Good to see the Dubs getting all excited over scraping home against Mayo. Some things never change....

Maybe. Anyway hurling is the main game and easily the better of the 2 games and hopefully Cork will win the All Ireland in that agasin this year.

Second round of games just gone....big guns started winning...Armagh, Kerry, Tyrone etc..it's all very sterile though. Galway were poor, Dublin were brought back to earth (alright they faught a bit), Offaly got off lightly in Tralee...and Cork shared it with Westmeath, a game I've heard nothing about but a draw seems about right for those two....not that it means anything really.

Anyone see the Armagh-Galway game at Crossmaglen?...don't they have lawnmowers up there? my mother's back garden would have had a better cut than that. And far less dogs on it.

go on...only a last gasp goal saved you lads from a taking a beating from a very average side.....even if it's meaningless.

An average Corkside sure did whip your sorry arse.

the paper I read said back Kerry to win by 2 pts, I said , "ask me bollix"..................

to be honest I thought Kerry would win by more, ah well ................

It may be early in the year, and fairly meaningless in fairness, but we seem to have a slight fitness problem at the moment. We can go out hard, build up a lead, then struggle to hold on to it. All-Ireland hangover or maybe nothing, but at least they are aware of it. It was our strong suit last year. I'm probably making more of it than should be this time of the year.

Dublin 0-11 - 0-09 Westmeath
Offaly 2-11 - 2-12 Mayo
Donegal 1-10 - 1-09 Kerry
Cork 0-13 - 1-12 Tyrone

There we have it for this week. I half watched Dublin Westmeath after United last night, but it was fairly dour I thought, the Dubs battled out the win though fair play, a decent start to the league for them. Apparantly we were 'sluggish' against Donegal , brilliant....and we had a good strong side out as well. Time we shaped up a bit and put in a bit of a rally for the rest of the league. We're fading badly in games, but you'd have to trust the fitness trainers, they got it spot on last year.

Just watched Cork and Tyrone on the box, best two sides in the country at the moment, a very good game. Cork look very lively this year, but again, this time of year isn't that big a deal really. Tyrone are just Tyrone. Stephen O'Neill and Sean Kavanagh were fantastic.

Decent win today for the Dubs, home advantage or not...and Tyrone were knocked off the perch a bit by Mayo, 2nd time in a row for Mayo there I think A draw for Cork and a Kerry trouncing of Iarmhi means it's tightened up a bit.....not that it matters in this kind of 'league'.

Anyone know where the league tables are? I've checked the RTE and GAA sites, but can't find them..

Did I mention Kerry humiliating Westmeath?

Westmeath were pretty shite and Kerry were hungrier and classier as expected.

Dublin have had a fairly decent start, winning games by tight margins, a bit done and a helluva lot to do

I watched Kerry on telly last night, and although the opposition was poor fair enough and we had a strong line up, it looks like the penny may have dropped that last year is gone, the fitness and desire was there as you say. Some wayward shooting, but you get that in March in the League. I bet the lights don't help either, but I don't know for sure about that.

I'd be happy enough if I was a Dub. Obviously it's nothing to get carried away about, but if you were to put this to a Dub during the height of the Brian Mullins fiasco when the panel were calling themselves to training, I bet they'd have taken it.

cant argue with that, what could have been a shambles aint so bad afterall...

consolidating our Division One status is about the best we can hope for at this stage and it looks like happening so we can have no complaints

Mayo 0-15 1-16 Kerry.

A good win by Ciarrai this one. Maughan was just on telly saying they were missing a few players, but anyone could say that, we hadn't Paul Galvin, Declan O'Sullivan, Marc O Se, Eamonn Fitzmaurice, Mike McCarthy, Johnny Crowley (might not be on the panel), Mike Frank only sub...that's a list of All-Stars and All-Ireland winners as long as your arm! Castlebar is a hard place to go and win, so I'm well pleased with that result. Declan Quill is coming on a lot this year, although he was shooting points for fun in the league last year as well, but they dried up in the Championship.

Can't wait for Tyrone in Tralee next week. Feck it, I might even go down, even though I almost always ignore league games. It's going to be a mighty game, Tyrone have been flying all year, but we are looking more like ourselves now. Of course, Tyrone will top the table for what it's worth, but there is the small matter of 2003 to address....there'll be skin and hair flying in Stack's Park next weekend. Somehow I think the amount of lovely girls coming down from Tyrone will be greatly reduced compared to that day in Croker.

Dublin are slipping now. Apparantly Cork breezed it - 'tis better ye should be getting....

Mattie Forde you mean?
Yes he did.

Thats the one, loose touch with the auld GAA when im away, bit of luck wexford'll loose in the leinster final so ill get a few days out in July. A lot of ppl are getting their hopes up about Wexford football nowadays which is new.
Matty Forde must be the first Yella Belly allstar footballer in nearly 50yrs!

Bit of a buzz around the Yellabellies in the big ball game this year alright. It's not unfounded either, second Div 1b at the moment, put one over on Armagh earlier on didn't they? Took a beating from Padraig Joyce at the weekend but look like making the semi's, should push for Leinster this year if things go their way.

What odds a Leinster hurling and football double for Wexford?

What has happened to us. I was looking at a good league campaign to build on the exploits of last year - but this is dreadful. We look hopeless.

I was talking to a Biff the other day and I would rate leinster like this.

1 - Laois
2 - Dublin
3 - Kildare
4 - Offaly
5 - Wexford (Maybe higher then Offaly)
6 - Meath
7 - Longford
8 - WESTMEATH (WTF)
9 - Carlow
10 - Wicklow
11 - Louth

We are pure dung.

dont know about that, the Dublin squad have been seen riding ladies bicycles recently, apparently they cant get their balls over the bar

Strange weekend....we smacked Tyrone out the gate though, that'll do for me. Looks like we lost it in the opening couple of weeks against Cork and Donegal, they say the league table doesn't lie and that's fair enough, Mayo and Tyrone deserved it. If I was Murt I'd be happy enough, first semi for 50 years, no pressure match v. Tyrone - it's all set up for ye Murt.

If I was Baz, I'd be scratching me head - actaully I'd be shitting it....next time An Iarmhi take the field, they'll be defending the Leinster Championship, it doesn't look good.

I had considered an 'If I were Nialler....', but there's not a lot I can say. I think Dublin have been average, but that's good in a way......not good enough in another. Leinster looks set up for Wexford.

If I were Keane16 I'd be quietly confident of seeing Kerry become the first team in years to defend Sam

I wouldn't worry too much if I were a Kerry fan, they're a completely different species in the championship

Although we've not made the semi's, I think we've strengthened our standing as the best side in the country...comfortable wins over Mayo and Tyrone, you can't argue with that. I've heard Maughan and Harte mentioning that Kerry put out a strong side in those games and that they had players missing, but that's waffle. Kerry have such a strong squad that any side will be strong, yesterday we were missing Daragh O'Se, Marc O'Se, Decky Sull, Eamon Fitzmaurice, Mike Frank benched, Crowley still undecided...it's something that all sides have to put up with and it'll be the same in The Championship. Also, we now get to concentrate exclusively on the Munster series.

On the flip side, maybe we worked out a lot of our Tyrone issues yesterday, and given them a few 'Kerry issues' that they may get to address in an All-Ireland semi.....also, one of those 4 sides left in the league is going to win the thing and thats a hell of a confidence boost for them.
