.................................TEAM green_smiley ..................................................... TEAM Michaelf7777777/cubemine

TACTICS TEAM green_smiley

Formation: 3-3-1-3

Tactics:
High-line, pressing all-over, with intention to:
  1. Close down opposition's space
  2. Cut out opposition's passing options
  3. Win back the ball as soon as possible
  4. Execute quick transition from defense to attack
GK: Grosics, founder of "sweeper-keeper" style of play, he is the 11th outfield player, knowing when to come out from the box to sweep away any dangerous play, thus allowing his teammates to press deep into opponents' half

Libero: Blankenburg, a Beckenbauer-lite, he is tasked to initiate attacking play from the deep, carry the ball out and join the midfield battle

Stoppers: Schwarzenbeck, he will be doing the 'cleaning' back in the defense when Blankenburg ventures forward. Alongside is also Pavard, 2018 World Cup winner, elegant and comfortable with the ball, and equally adept in either centre-back or right-back position

Defensive box-to-box midfielder: Tardelli, a hard-tackler with fantastic work rate, but also a skillful and elegant player. He provides screening to defensive line, but also given license to get forward and contribute offensively when team has the ball

Wingbacks: Briegel and Gerets, both possess high physical and technical abilities. Their primary task is to own the flanks, create overloading and provide width while the likes of Ribery or Simonsen cutting in

Second striker: Keegan, fantastic work rate at both attacking and defensive phase. Great dribbling skill and ball control, and good aerial prowess too despite his height. Can create or score goals

Inside forwards: Ribery and Simonsen, looking to torment opposition's defense with trickery and finishing skills. Also have ability to drag defenders away and thus create space for other attacking teammates

Center forward: Krankl, arguably best Austrian football player of all time. Top scorer at both club and international level

TACTICS TEAM Michaelf7777777/cubemine

Formation: 4-2-1-3

Our goalkeeper is Iker Casillas who was in one world cup (2010) and two european championship (2008, 2012) teams of the tournament as well as being the best goalkeeper in the world every year from 2008 to 2012 according to the IFFHS and being in the FIFPro world XI 5 times in consecutive years from 2008 to 2012 as well as being a member of the UEFA team of the year 6 times between 2007 and 2012. Casillas has brilliant shot stopping and positioning abilities as well as being consistent, quick off his line in one on one situations, a good distributor of the ball and has an ability to make saves at crucial moments.

Our right back is Mirsad Fazlagic who was a member of the Euro 68 team of the tournament as the captain of Yugoslavia who reached the final. He was a strong and resolute defender who was also good going forward who was considered one of the best fullbacks of his generation and would have broken the world transfer record for a defender if he hadn't gotten injured in 1971.

Our first centre back is Germano who was chosen for the World Soccer World XI in 1961, 1962 and 1965 as well as ranking 53rd in a UEFA list of greatest footballers in the first 50 years of UEFA (1954-2004). Germano was a total player good both on the ball and defensively and a big game player as shown by his performance in both the 1961 and 1965 European Cup Finals.

Our second centre back is Giorgio Chiellini who was the Serie A dfender of the year 3 times between 2008 and 2010 and a member of the UEFA team of the year in 2017 as well as being voted into the greatest Juventus XI of all time. Chiellini is good in the air, strong with great positioning and leadership abilities who started his career as a left back. Walter Mazzarri who has managed both Napoli and Inter Milan described Chiellini as

a force of nature, from another planet, able to mark three players himself

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/jun/02/world-cup-2014-italy-profile-giorgio-chiellini

Our left back is Rafael Gordillo who has 75 Spanish caps and finished 15th in France Football's Football Player of the Century, which was voted on by 30 players who won the Ballon d'Or between 1956 and 1999 (excluding Best, Matthews, Sivori and Yashin). He was according to the Spanish magazine Don Balon the best Spanish player in the 1979-80 season. Gordillo was equally comfortable both as a wingback and a midfielder had a high work rate which made him good at both attacking and defending on his flank and had a good left foot which was used for both creating and scoring. On winning his Ballon d'Or in 1987, Ruud Gullit commented that:
I appreciate this award, but it's not fair. I would have given it to Gordillo. He is the best player who steps in the fields now.

The more defensive of our two central midfielders is Romeo Benetti who won 55 caps for Italy. Benetti was usually played as a central or defensive midfielder who was known for hid high levels of strength, stamina and leadership as well as being a tough tackler. On the ball he had good technique and passing abilities as well as having a good shot from distance.

The more attacking of our two central midfielders is Giacomo Bulgarelli who won 29 caps for Italy and was according to Fabio Capello, in 2009, italy's greatest midfielder. Apart from 2 games in the NASL at the end of his career he played his entire career for Bologna with whom he won 1 Serie A and 2 Coppa Italia's. Bulgarelli was a complete, determined, hard working and consistent midfielder who was skilled at breking down plays and passing it to his teammates. On the ball he had excellent vision, passing and technical skills. On his death in 2009 Fabio Capello thought Bulgarelli
was the best midfielder Italy has had. He knew how to stay on the pitch, recover balls, score goals, he was a leader on and off the pitch.

Sergio Campana who was a teammate of Bulgarelli's at Bologna and the President of the Italian Footballers Association between 1968 and 2011 described Bulgarelli as
a great champion, he was complete, technically very strong, he made himself respected in the field, he had the skills of Rivera and Mazzola put together

Our attacking midfielder is Argentinian Ricardo Bochini who was Maradona's idol and was referred to by Maradona in 1986 as Maestro. Bochini was one of the best playmakers of the 1980's due to his vision and passing abilities and could also zig zag between defenders with his dribbling skills. He was an expert at what is called 'la pausa' where an attacking midfield playmaker delays a pass in order for the recipient to reach an ideal position. In Argentinian football a precise pass to give a forward a one one one opportunity against the goalkeeper is still called a pase bochinesco (which means Bochinesque pass). In our team our three forwards are all well equipped to take full advantage of Bochini's passing skills due to a close footballing relationship with Bochini (Bertoni); good off the ball and space finding skills (Rensenbrink); and pace (Eto'o).

Our right winger is Daniel Bertoni who was a teammate of Bochini's at Independiente, won the world cup with Argentina in 1978 and is a member of the Fiorentina Hall of Fame. Bertoni was a powerful and quick winger who liked to cut inside from his flank. Bertoni also had a vey good footballing relationship with Bochini who described his footballing relationship with Bertoni as follows:
With Bertoni we understood each other from the very first time we played together, and we didn't have to speak about it. It was just natural; it really felt as though we had been playing together for our whole lives, based on our personal attributes: I was quick and skilful, he was powerful and good for one-twos, what we call la pared [wall pass] in Argentina. He could play in different positions but I always wanted him to be close, because we understood each other so well with those short passes.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/jan/23/ricardo-bochini-argentina-legend-pausa

Our left winger is Rob Rensenbrink who finished 2nd in the 1976 Ballon d'Or and 3rd in the 1978 Ballon d'Or as well as being a member of the team of the tournament at both the 1974 and 1978 world cups. Rensenbrink was a great dribbler as well as being great at finding space and a good goal scorer (at Anderlecht between the 1972-73 and 1977-78 seasons his goalscoring record was as follows: 20 in 28, 23 in 31, 22 in 41, 31 in 44, 23 in 43, and 23 in 31).

Our striker is Samuel Eto'o who was in both the FIFPro and UEFA team of the year in both 2005 and 2006. Eto'o was extremely quick, strong, a good finisher both on the ground and in the air, as well as having a great work rate and good technique.

I'd have expected them to play the hybrid wing back/midfielder role (the old half back roles). Briegel is perfect for it and someone like Bonhof on the right would have been great.
Tardelli as a 1 man midfield is an intriguing setup.

Exactly, hence the arrows
Gerets can occupy space at right-hand side of midfield just as effective, as shown in video here

I'll check the video out. I didn't have that impression of Gerets till now for sure.
The reason I said 'expected' is your write up for the wing backs doesn't mention much about the midfield role but fair enough about the arrows. Probably could have been a bit more horizontal to get the point across.

@Michaelf7777777

Was intrigued with your drafting from the very start.
Not sure if I have missed it in the OP, but was there a theme involved around which you were building?

Initially, I was trying to get the best non-stars available, and after getting Bochini trying to structure my picks so that I could either play the formation I am playing in this match or a 4-1-2-1-2 narrow formation

Nice, good luck. Will follow the discussion.

I was trying to wrap my head around @green_smiley formation until I realized it basically just a Bielsa tactic yes? I still need to digest it but I think as a Bielsa type 3313 its very viable and powerful

I wish you didn't have Pavard though as Rensenbrink vs. Pavard is the weakspot I think in the tactic

It's the first time I have heard of Germano and Fazlagic. What's the opinion on them from some people who have watched a few videos / games with them in it? Any comparable players, how to do they match up style / quality wise against the type of forwards on show here?

Yeah, tactics is inspired from Bielsa's, although not 100%

Pavard is by means not a weak link. He has been impressive at both club (in terms of performance) and international level, and excel in a high line, high pressing type system. He is equally comfortable in either back three or back four formation. He is also tactically flexible, can play at CB, RB or even holding midfielder

Then he is capable of this:

Fazlagić - mostly grandpa source:

Defensively sound and very disciplined. Also, pretty good in the attack despite not scoring often, but he joined and linked with his forwards very well when he went on his surging runs. He was pretty fast with incredible stamina and good in the air. Youngest captain of the Sarajevo and Yougoslavian team which says all about his leadership skills. It is true he would make a transfer to Juventus which was rumored to be a world record fee at the time for a defender if it wasn't for his injury. Part of the Euro 1968 best team (the rest of the defence was Facchetti, Schesternev and Bobby Moore, so not a bad company) and was generally considered as one of the best fullbacks at that time.
Hard to say who is comparable with him, pretty much a typical Yugoslavian FB at the time, very physical and technically good, defensively sound, but if space opens up he would not need an invitation. Looking at Yougoslavian FB-s, both Stankovic and Jusufi are rated higher, but that is nothing to be ashamed of and tbf it has something to do with both Stankovic and Jusufi playing for higher profile teams (Partizan and Zvezda).

I watched only parts of his game against United in the European Cup at Old Trafford where Sarajevo lost 2-1 and he was pretty defensive, but it was also a consequence of United attacking threat and the fact that Sarajevo played a large part of the second half with 10 men (the match basically turned into a brawl at one point with police on the pitch). From what I remembered his side was targetted by Aston and Charlton popping in those areas, but he didn't have many problems as did his partners at CB for example (Best played as a forward practically). Still, Aston was a pretty good winger on his own. He also kept quiet young Johan Cruyff in one game dealing with him for 90 minutes, but it was Cruyff at the age of 20 and it was a friendly.

He is against Ribery here and considering his speed, stamina and defensive attributes, think he would do well, but it is obvious that the opposition plan is to overload the flanks and he would have to deal with Briegel too which lead us to the question how good is Germano of which I have absolutely no idea.

Anyway, good to see him in the draft game.
