I know there's quite a number of Singaporeans on this forum, so can someone please tell me what's going on re: the latest announcement about Starhub winning the EPL rights in SG above ESPN?

Apparently, they are saying that this means that we won't be getting shows like Nokia Football Crazy and Football Focus anymore. Is that true???

I don't give a damn which channel I watch the games on and Football Crazy irritates the hell out of me but Football Focus (with John Dykes) is absolutly the best show on football we get here and it's gonna be shit without it :( :( :(

(yes, this thread comes with the usual disclaimers: I hope this is in the right forum, I did check and didn't see this discussed anyplace else, etc.)

Edited to ask: Eh or should this be in the Football Forum instead? :confused:

Starhub's not purchasing ESPN programmes anymore.

Which means you'll have to find alternative sources to watch ESPN, who will most likely discontinue their programmes.

Bastards :( I was under the impression that the programmes won't discontinued tho, just not screened here.

By alternative sources, do you mean online?

If StarHub beat EPSN for the right of Premiership football in Singapore, it means that they will show the matches through their own channels, not ESPN.
And any Premiership related shows in ESPN would not be shown in Singapore, unless they are given permission by StarHub to do so.
ESPN Asiawould not be discontinued just because StarHub chose not to show it, neither are Premiership related programming on EPSN. Anyone who think that that's the case need to have more education as he/she is clearly lacking in logical thinking.
The fact that ESPN Asia is based in Singapore has feck all to do with its discontinuation. Singapore is a small market, ESPN Asia has a much larger market, compared to this small island.
If ESPN is not shown in Singapore, chances are they will shift their regional HQ to other cities for convenience sake.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think most of the ESPNAsia shows are very Singapore-oriented.

Let me see
F1 = Singapore oriented?
NBA= Singapore oriented?
Premiership = Singapore oriented?
Golf = Singapore oriented?

Yes ESPN Asiais making its original programming in Singapore. That doesn't mean ESPN is Singapore oriented.

Channel V is based in KL, but have you ever heard people claming Channel V is Malaysia oriented?

The fact that ESPN has a SportsCenter Malaysia, and not SportsCenter Singapore shows that how "Singapore oriented" ESPN Asia really is.:lol:

I meant the original programmes that ESPN make.

Get your reading glasses on. Since the start I've been talking about the original programmes.

Right from the start, the threadstarter were asking about the two programmes, mainly Nokia Football Crazy and Football Focus.

Dont be a cnut.

What I've read is that espn star sports will still be available to starhub viewers who subscribe to the sports package, it will just not show EPL content, which means your sportcenters will still be shown but not football focus etc. They are introducing a new channel called ten sports, which would be the main provider of EPL to us. However, I'm sceptical about them just introducing 1 channel to show the EPL, considering that you need at least two matches to show simultaneously played matches. Since the sports package rates have increased, I'm expecting starhub to provide more content in terms of the EPL, not less so they had better not let us down.

Starhub have still not announced the exact structure of their broadcasting for the Premier League (a tad worrying given it's just over a fortnight away) although thankfully they have confirmed the price rise for the sports package to pay for their overbid on the rights:rolleyes:.

I would assume the recently appeared Supersports 1 & 2 which have very little on them as yet have been created specifically for the Premiership matches which will be bought with the same Sky feed as ESPN used so there should be no change during the matches. It will probably mean we get more matches though as they have the rights to all 380 matches and will likely show them all as i-Cable did in Hong Kong when they outbid ESPN 5 years back. The half time chat, news shows etc will be all new though and Starhub will have to put them together so expect a more local flavour than ESPN had although hopefully not as irritating as GoGoGoal was in Hong Kong (face painting, sing alongs,inflatable clackers and presenters who changed shirts to support the other team mid match).

ESPN & Star will still be broadcast, they will just switch to something else in place of Premiership matches and the football highlights shows. We will still get the cups on there though and thankfully, unlike in HK, Starhub will still broadcast ESPNStar so you won't need to shell out for a second provider as we had to in HK.

ESPN & Star still broadcast the prem to the rest of Asia barring HK and Singapore so the channel itself won't be going anywhere, they just got outbid for local broadcast rights in a couple countries by cable suppliers who wanted to ensure they kept the rights.

They got outbid in Thailand as well.

Didn't know it had happened but it was logically the next one to go given the number of Premiership fans there, only the greater relative wealth of HK and SG made it happen there first. It will eventually happen throughout the region as ESPN aim to manufacture one programme for the whole region but don't want to get involved in the ridiculous Dutch auctions with some of the more aggressive regional cable and satellite providers who are looking to guarantee their service has the monopoly in that country and then gradually screw the consumers for it in the same way Sky did to BSB in the UK.

Unfortunately this greed will eventually see some of these channels go under and the fans will be mightily pissed off when they suddenly find their is no way of legitimately watching the matches.

Apparently, what's been reported in the papers today is that there might be 2 or 3 channels dedicated to the live EPL matches. However, the broadcast won't be directly from sky sports in the UK, which means we won't get commentators like andy gray and martin tyler anymore. That's a major disappointment considering that good commentators contribute at least 50% to the entertainment of watching a live match, and they don't come any better than andy gray and martin tyler. I'm pissed off.

feck :( grrrrrrrrrrrr who the hell cares about their "benefits" of 3 simulteneous football channels and all that crap when the very basic feature that everyone looks for (ie, good commentary) gets removed?

Another question: does the EPL get screened on Malaysian or Indonesian free to air channels like the Champions League was last season? (I remember watching the Roma game on Malaysian free to air, I think)

Champions League would still be aired in terrestrial stations (MediaPrima Group) in Malaysia next season.

Just an update for whoever's interested.

From what is being published in local papers today, apparantly its been confirmed that Starhub will have 3 channels that will be showing the EPL. Channel 27 will be a new 24 hr channel that will be dedicated solely for the EPL, while channels 21 and 22 will also be broadcasting live EPL matches. This gives us viewers more choices of matches to choose from on match days.

Another positive is that, contrary to previous reports, resident commentators like martin tyler will still be featured during matches, and all live feeds obtained by Starhub will come directly from the EPL's official broadcasting station.

Apparantly, there will also be two other channels ; goal tv1(channel 107) and goal tv2(channel 108) added. These will show matches from various leagues across the continent, including the dutch league matches. These channels will also be broadcasting content from Manutd Tv at times, so there's good news for united fans.

I hope this has clarified any doubts, and I for one am finally looking forward to what these new channels will offer in the near future. I was quite skeptical previously, but now that the details have been released, I'm eagerly waiting for the EPL to start.

GoalTV has always been available on Starhub as an additional channel. Now they're forcing you to pay for it in the basic sports group.

That's the problem with Singapore. We don't have any other alternatives to choose from Starhub(Mio Tv doesn't even have the EPL or football for that matter). We are like puppets forced to follow one broadcaster.

Well they'd better deduct the subscription for that from the price hike on the sports package then as I currently pay for both. The MUTV coverage on Goal TV1 isn't up to much though as it's all screened late evening or at night with either Liverpool or Scottish League on the rest of the day. It's OK for the repeats of any games you miss and the occasional youth team matches but if it weren't for the DVD recorder I'd see none of them.

I'm still confused about this.
I'm a cable subscriber in Indonesia, my provider provide ESPN Asia and StarSports channels.
Does this mean I'm not going to get Premiership matches in Indonesia from these channels? Or ONLY Singaporeans that wouldn't get it?

Don't worry. As far as we know apart from Singapore and Thailand, ESPN/Star would still be showing Premiership matches in other countries it broadcasts.

enghuei's right. It won't affect the rest of Asia, only Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand have bought out the rights. I'd just moved from Hong Kong where I was sick of the crap coverage to Singapore and was pleased to have ESPN back so just pray Jakarta's not my next posting.
