Its come to my attention that some people are not using spoilers when discussing TV/movies.

Dont ruin it for everyone else who hasn't seen it yet.

Use spoilers or mods will infract the shit out of you until you're banned, not just here but all over the forum.

I think there needs to be some clarification over this. I don't think I'm one of the offenders, but do we put spoilers for anything regarding the show even if you're in the 6th season and your talking about season 1?

The problem is when a poster doesn't specify whether he's guessing what happens or if he's heard a rumour.

The Entertainment forum is like a mine field in regards to reading spoilers.

'The Grapes of Caf' S05EP14 was awesome when GB banned Solius for sleeping with you-know-who in the boathouse.

Just curious: how was this handled before the spoiler tags came along?

The spoiler tag thing is great. I used to get spoiled accidentally on the caf a fair number of times before it was added.

Agreed there should be some sort of protocol.

For me if I'm in the Dexter thread I should be able to talk about everything except future episode spoilers without using spoiler tags. Don't enter the thread if your not up to date! Its tiresome seeing pages of conversation all in spoiler tags.

I don't agree with that, if somebody is watching the show from the start and is part way through it why should they be restricted from entering the thread just because you've seen more?

Spoiler tags are there to prevent anybody having a show/film ruined, not just those who are up to the latest episodes.

Surely this only applies to certain threads though

So others can't discuss it because 1 random guy isn't upto date ?

Spoiler = Anything that hasn't aired on tv.

Why should people use spoiler tags in a Lost season 5 thread? If you haven't seen it don't enter the thread yet.

If your part way through a show whats the point of entering the thread?Everyone will be discussing the latest happenings anyway. People may even talk about long gone events like its common knowledge without even using spoiler tags.

simple to dodge this sort of thing really...only enter a thread when you are up to date with the current episode.

Otherwise you're just asking for a spoiler to be honest.

Fair enough if the thread is season specific, but not all of them are, the Dexter thread for example contains discussion of all seasons I believe? Personally I'm up to date so it doesn't effect me, but I think considering the whole concept of spoiler tags is a courtesy to those who havn't seen bits then it would be fair to do it for everything.

If most people disagree then fair enough.

Spoiler tags should only be for future episodes, if they're not then you might as well have everything in a thread about a particular series in spoiler tags. Also, if you have the same rules for already broadcast and future episodes, it prevents people who don't want to see spoilers from discussing recent episodes, because they'll risk seeing future spoilers by clicking on stuff in spoiler tags.

It is simple and obvious. Anything to do with the plot of anything needs to be in spoilers.

The premise of a TV show e.g. Dexter is about a sociopath serial killer with code who works as a CSI type blood guy for the police, is fine but it wouldn't be fine to say anything about how the plot develops. If what you say would in any way spoil a person's enjoyment of a film or an episode if they hadn't seen it then it needs to be in spoiler tags.

If you don't like that tough. Go elsewhere to discuss it.

Tough luck. Spoilers make it the readers choice. If they choose to open a spoiler that, funnily enough, spoils an episode then they shouldn't have opened it.

If you haven't seen it yet then don't open the spoilers. If people are too dumb to use the tags correctly then they are going to get infraction. Like GB I am sick to death of selfish lazy people giving the plot of things away.

Spoiler = Anything that hasn't aired on tv.

But aired on TV where? Aired on TV in America? What about those of us who watch things in the UK or elsewhere and want to discuss our latest episodes, which can be anything up to six months behind? A separate thread? I think not.

Not everyone lives in America - or illegally downloads the shows - and can therefore see them the moment they are aired.

You do realise that means pretty much the entire Dexter thread should be in spoiler tags. Apart from the "Wow what an episode!", "Is this show any good?" or "Cant wait for next week!" comments. I would say 90% of the people in there are there to discuss the latest episode, so its irritating to say the least to have pages worth of discussion in spoiler tags.

I personally don't see why someone whos only seen one season of Dexter would want to enter the thread, seeing as everyone's primarily discussing the latest episode anyways.

However if that's what the mods want then I think what would make alot more sense would be to have season specific threads. So in this case the person could bump up the old season 1 thread if he wants to add anything.

EDIT: Another problem remains with actual future episode spoilers. How do we differentiate between this and a normal latest episode spoiler?

When I was catching up with 24 I checked on Wikipedia the date where the episode I'd just watched was aired. I'd then check the 24 thread and only scroll down to the date just before the next episode. That way I never spoiled anything for myself. I've become quite good at avoiding spoilers.

With regards to Dexter, I'm a big Dexter fan but the latest season hasn't been shown yet in the UK. It'll be coming over soon, but I don't want to go to that thread to discuss things after it's shown only to accidentally read something about the finale because someone's too lazy to put something in spoiler tags.

And why is everyone saying it's annoying or difficult? How hard is it to write
[./spoiler] around your text, and click on the little button that says "show"?

Perhaps forum etiquette should demand you write what episode/season you're relating the spoiler to above it - that would cure the problem of knowing what the content is about without knowing what it is.

It's annoying because people don't differentiate between broadcast episodes and future episodes and just put everything in spoiler tags.

Yes. That is the purpose of the spoiler tags.

You don't need to to. Personally I don't read about anything I'm watching until I'm fully up to date because I hate having things spoiled. However, if you open a spoiler, any spoiler, before you are fully up to date and you end up reading something you didn't want to then you shouldn't have read the spoiler. Simple. You had a choice and you can't complain if you made the wrong one.

Yeah fair enough I'm not against spoiler tags in that instance.

But say I mention this in the thread -I'M ASSUMING YOU'VE SEEN UPTO SEASON 3 OF DEXTER.

Doakes was a great character.

Is that something I also need to put in spoiler tags for people who've never seen the show before? Like I said before, that basically means almost any discussion relating to the show might give things away to newcomers and should all be in spoilertags.

That would be a great idea but I suspect people are too selfish and/or lazy.

I think we should try it. Series at least.

To be fair, Wibbs, that then opens up the question of why bother going into the thread then? If anything remotely plot related has to be spoiler tagged in order to prevent spoilage, and there's no way to differentiate, then people who aren't fully up to date won't bother going in there. They won't know which spoiler tags they can read, and which they can't. So if they're not going in there anyway, because they can't guarantee they won't have things spoiled, why bother putting things in spoiler tags in the first place? Those who haven't seen it won't be in the thread, because they can't do anything without the risk of having it ruined anyway.

Unless of course you add something like my suggestion, where people reference what they're talking about.

Edit: I see you agree with me!

Thing is despite being fully upto date some people find out rumours/facts for future not yet aired episodes through websites and also post those in spoiler tags.

When I am current or almost current I sometimes read stuff near the end of the thread. So far by watching the dates of the posts and the flow of the conversation I have not spoiled a future episode for myself but if I did I would be to blame for being impatient and the person who made the post wouldn't be at fault if they used spoiler tags.

They should always be in spoilers and preferably the content flagged as future speculation.

No, I agree with you. This would also be helped were people to reference the season, as you suggest. I could, for example, load up the Dexter thread, put my post under "Opener of season 4" and then happily avoid all the others that don't match that same title.

No not just preferably. If you're posting a rumour in a spoiler, then it has to be stated above, otherwise the spoiler tags are completely useless against future episode-talk when everything else is in spoiler tags as well.
