SPANISH PRESS ROUND UP
Round-up of Spanish press reports taken variously from El Pais, Marca, AS and La Voz de Galicia:
No real sour grapes from the Spanish Press about the result. They all agree that it was a clear penalty on Tristan, suggesting that it could have been a turning point as our second goal came immediately afterwards, but they also acept that the penalties on Giggs and RVN were just as obvious, although they don’t dwell on the matter since the game was decided by then. But none of them deny that the victory was well deserved.
“Manchester is providing the the ground for the Final of the Champions [as it’s known in Spain], and I wouldn´t be surprised if they provided one of the teams as well” - MARCA
As far as individual players go Phil Nev´s and Veron´s enthusiastic tackling provoked quite a few comments, particularly on Spanish TV, and although some Reds have expressed surprise at Veron´s booking, I think it was more for accumulation than anything else, and that by continental standards we were not too hard done by. A big implied compliment to these two is that they completely stopped Valeron, Depor´s main attacking hope, from getting a kick. I saw him get quite a few, from Phil, but I don´t think that’s what they mean. For the Spaniards half the game was lost here.
Going forwards we’ve got “three marvellous players – Van Nistelrooy, Giggs and Scholes” [El Pais]...
RVN obviously and quite rightly gets most of the headlines, particularly since the game had been set up as a duel between him and Jock Makaay. He is the “Grand Marshall of the Area” for Marca, “a man obsessed with scoring goals”. “Every English attack was a threat, a master- class of touch play: Now Giggs, Now Solskjaer, and always Van Nistelrooy” [AS],
“The best of the Dutch School, which is saying a lot ... he can work as a target man, back to goal, like Kluivert, but also has technique beyond the range of the vast majority of forwards, and finally has the predatory of instinct of real goalscorers” [El Pais]
According to the Voz de Galicia Giggs was a constant nightmare for the Depor defence, in particular Scaloni, and the dribble that led to his shot against the post and RVN´s offside follow-up “defines him as one of the best footballers in the world”, AS says simply “what a display – nobody could stop him”, and he’s “an extraordinary winger” for El Pais
But it´s Scholes who gets really gets El Pais’ juices flowing: “In a
team so convinced of its own glamour, Scholes is on another wavelength. He plays without vanity, concentrating on all the details that win matches. If he distributes he does it with speed and precision; if he gets into the box it is to surprise; and if he shoots a goal is guaranteed [ahem]. He is not Beckham, he´s better. But even after this remarkable performance he didn´t get the adulation he deserves. That seems too be his destiny, there´s always someone else to grab the headlines, this time Van Nistelrooy”
