What can I do? Its to do with his email address. Can he get on with a hotmail account?

no big email accounts, try hushmail.com, thats what i used

We've blocked most yahoo type web based accounts in order to reduce the amount of return WUMs and former banned posters from trying to slip through the system again. Best advise is to have him use the two options that Burndogg and RF offered.
