most people, including me, were happy that we passed on him last summer when we had the chance to get him for feck all. after this season, do you think we should have signed him?

I think he'd like to stay in London, so even if we have chased him he would still join Arsenal.

In hindsight, he would've been a good buy, an ideal replacement for Stam. When it became clear Campbell was to leave Spurs, I was hoping we would sign him and pair him with Stam, it would've been a great defence.

I was in the minority - I would love to have seen him come to OT.

Now we are the ones with egg on our faces

I don`t think there need to be any real regrets over not signing Sol - every account I read of his transfer saga made one thing clear. His priority was to stay in London and not uproot himself by coming to Manchester.

I am a Sol fan, particularly as Spurs fans were so vicious and vindictive when they learned where he was going yet he rode out that storm with dignity. Paul Ince whines about the Red Devils` disrespect for him because he signed for Liverpool, but the stick he got was the candy kind that hangs on Christmas trees compared to the vileness that poured out of White Hart Lane.

But Sol wanted to stay in London. End of story.

I always felt that Sol would have been a good addition but that he would have gone abroad rather than have come to Manchester.

That is also true of many foreign stars who would prefer to go to London rather than anywhere else in the country. This is a trend that is not going to change quickly.

Hence the importance of getting 'em young.

Presumably because he expected to be shouted at because he isn't very good?

Hi Jopub, I was disappointed to see that I cannot send you a private message - maybe you don`t want abusive email but I would never do that.

So the Arse won it - and that is true. I love Manchester United til I die and beyond and I will support our lads in the same way, but I am sad they went out of the season with the Arsenal and Charlton results.

I know being a PLC can be very helpful but I could not help but think that if all the Gooner pubs were Manchester United mad ones, they would be forced to change their names. That your part of London has so many pubs and shops that can fly the colours and use the name of Arsenal with no interference from the official Arsenal Club speaks volumes about what your club is still and what Manchester United is not.

I am in no way connecting that fact with our disappointing season. I am simply saying it is nice to see a top football club free of the more gross and invasive commercial transactions that I feel mar my beloved Manchester United.

Hi Gg

Very good point that and something I have not considered before .

If you support Man Utd is it difficult reconciling the fact that the game / club was always a working class sport and so always had the connection of the broad mass of the people .

Of course now that is no longer the case and Man Utd represent the new order of the game at it's most financially repugnant . Don't get me wrong , nothing personal against Man Utd here as your club is simply the leader in this respect .

You are the markey leader in the changing face of football and all of us following you already know it leads to the loss of something unique for every fan of their club . Don't worry plans are already a foot to change the face of the Arse so to speak !

We out here have to compete with you not only on the field but in everything else too - selling shirts , name branding , far east promotion and business .

You have shown the way in this respect and I feel in my bones that it cannot be generally for the good of the game . It will lead to monopoly by few clubs and then it won't be worth really winning anything anyway .!

I remember when the % a season ticket cost a certain amount . I used to go with 5 bob !! as a kid .

Now I cannot possibly afford to go - family life and work geography - but most of all financially I am priced out of football .

In the end our great clubs are turning away the people in the end I think they will need AGAIN

Then what .

I caom efrom an age when you could put names to faces at the ground .

NOT ANY MORE

It's the age of the faceless fan .

It's impossible to see it happening but should Utd say drop , go out of the champions league
battle relegation etc - I know you'd not agree with this - but there WOULD be spaces on the terraces

Tha's a bit of an indictment .

If it happened at Arsenal I would have filled on of those spaces long before the Hooray Henry that filled it while we had success !!

Now GG , like you hint at, I 'm not sure I'd want to be part of it . It's no mistake to mention that the atmosphere at grounds these days - yours and ours is nothing like it was . Could be all seating but it 's not - It's the people - they're different . As Roy Keane pointed out - the prawns are just as important !!

You're not that far in front of us in this respect I'm afraid to say .

Good to talk

Hi JoPub, thanks for taking the time to reply. 1 thing - I am gg (giggsgirl) not GG (GiggsysGirl) in case their is any confusion! Not that I object to anything in her posts but I am a different person.

Yes, I know clubs have to get into the commercial side of the sport but it will be a sad day when all the local pubs and shops around London get told they cannot use Arsenal`s name without buying the (very) expensive rights to it. The PLC is useful but some of the commercial ventures of Manchester United are crass and if Arsenal don`t go down that track, you are doing the right thing.

Note the

Suggests I wasn't entirely serious don't you think?

BTW using the word "honestly" in a post will make people think you are lying. Unless you weren't being entirely serious  :p

Interesting point.

Makes you wonder if SAF's outburst against the Press last week might have put any potential signings off?

Well the personality of managers is a fascinating subject I feel .

On this subject it's interesting to note that Sol very nearly went up to Pool with Houllier and he does bear a resemblance to le Boss ( He's only a pale imitation tho !! :D :D )

I have to say having played a bit meself cup throwing loud men a la Ferg put me right off .

If you're a good player you KNOW when you 've played well or not - made mistakes or not -whatever

Saying that everybody is of course different and we all respond in various ways .

For me the intelligent quiet word in the ear or point made in discussion is enough .

OF course there's room for loud verbose encouragement and a dressing room is no place for tip toeing angels !! but ultimately throwing cups and tirading , eyes bulging out just makes you look a fool but granted for some players it's needed .

I think where Fregie is brilliant and Wenger too is in knowing who responds to what exactly . You don't need to gee up Roy Keane or Tony Adams but you do need to gently caress the egos of say Bergkamp or say Solksjaer for example ( although I know less about him as a character ).

Do you know that Sol hardly EVER gets booked , quite remarkable for a man in his position ! and is a very gentle giant .

To be honest though it all came down mostly to not having to uproot sticks family etc , it's too important to him it turns out .

Did'nt half make those Tottnumbs happy tho
:D :D

To look in to the Sol Campbell saga,I personal don`t like the fella.

1.He said in public "I`m staying at Spurs"
2.He left Spurs
3.He lies
4.He joins Arsenal who are hated by Spurs"just to rub their faces in it"
5.If he had any passion about Spurs he would have joined Madrid,Barcelona,Utd,Liverpool etc.but not ARSENAL.

I feel he let alot of people down at Spurs he could have let them sell him and then they could have had the money to replace him.But he said he was staying just to get more money with the Bosman shit ruling.

He isn`t a nice fella end of story.
Glad he didn`t join us.

"most people, including me, were happy that we passed on him last summer when we had the chance to get him for feck all. after this season, do you think we should have signed him?"

Unfortunately, your analysis is about as accurate as Sir Alex's.

No doubt, like SAF, you would have willingly spend 28m pounds on the greatest White Elephant in English footballing history: Juan Sebastian Veron.

Wenger, who is obviously less ignorant than you, took a different tack. He spent 0.0m pounds on transferring Campbell to Arsenal, as opposed to the 28m pounds SAF spent on Veron. After that, Wenger won the Double.

Very cluely move by Wenger. But then we've always known Wenger is Einstein compared to SAF. We need to get Wenger over to Old Trafford asap. SAF is Yesterday's Man.

Right the cats has been well and truly thrown in amongst the pigeons. SAF remember has won the title more in the last five years than has Wenger, he has won the CL, got further in this years CL, write SAF off at your peril ;)

Sol had a dodgy phase early in the season (which more or less co-incided with our own dodgy period in defence).

Not sure it was the difference between the teams in the premiership, or that he has what it takes in Europe. If we ever get relegated though, I think he's the very model of what we would need to get out of Divison 1.

Campbell's a good player, no question, but if he didn't want to join United, then good luck to him.He will still win things at Arsenal, and if London's where he wants to be, it was the only choice he could have made.
