So, who's the one who we nearly signed in Jan and will be in the summer?

Reflecting back to the January window, when Fergie said we almost signed someone but the player and his club agreed that the summer would be the right time for it to happen... who do we now think it was?

Likely contenders:

Ashley Young - Good possibility

Charlie Adam - Hopefully not. He's not bad, but Man United quality? Hmmm...

Jordan Henderson - Bleh

Jack Rodwell - I have a good feeling it's him. Oliver Kay in The Times said today we will be in for him in the summer. Great prospect imo. Yes please.

What do you reckon?

i think its Cahil

I hope its not Rodwell. I want to see more of him for Everton for at least another season.

I'd much prefer a left-footed left-winger rather than one who fannies about cutting inside although he does seem more direct than Nani who is the biggest exponent of fannying about...

I think it was possibly Ashley Young tbh

I dont think we have a need for him. Our wings are very well stocked; even next year with Giggs likely to stay on next year and Cleverley starting to make noises, along with Park, Nani and Valencia we have the best array of wingers in any club side in the world. Where would Young get a game?

I agree, but theres no smoke without fire and he seems to be being constantly linked to us. He also wouldnt have been cup tied for CL i'm sure if he'd been signed in January.

I dont think we've as good a depth of wingers as you do. I think in the future we could see Park and Giggs used mostly in the centre, with the likes of Obertan and Bebe loaned out. Young can play anywhere across midfield, is still young, is English, affordable and available, and most importantly can take a fecking set piece :). I wouldnt be amazed if we signed him.

Would've been cup-tied for CL games, I don't think Fergie would have gone for a player he couldn't use in the biggest games.
His January purchases down the years have all been able to play in Europe; Cole (we were already out anyway), Saha, Larsson.
I think when we bought Vidic and Evra, hadn't we already been eliminated in the group stage that year by Benfica?

In all serious though, I think those who say Sanchez are spot on.

So, all this talk about Ashley Young and Alexis Sanchez, are we thinking it's time for Nani to take, perhaps not a step-down, but a step sidewards?
After all, Valencia is seemingly the favoured winger and has yet to have a spell of inconsistency; he's just a good, solid performer week in week out.

I've not seen much from Sanchez other than YouTube clips, and I've seen lots of Ashley Young to know he's a good player but is he United class? I'm not sure.
Saying that, I wasn't too sure about Yorke's ability to step up at Old Trafford from Villa Park and he shown he was indeed with a vengeance.

In an ideal (muppet) world, I'd sign a direct left-footed left winger to counter Valencia's right-flank as those mentioned, including Nani, are all right-footed and tend to cut in.

Hasn't raul confined a few times that we tried to sign him in Jan but it didn't go through?

Has to be him cutely.

Please not Charlie Adam, ashley young, Henderson or rodwell.

I think it's Sanchez. A lot of people seemed to think he was moving or that an announcement about him was imminent around the deadline. Then nothing happened.

He would have been available for the CL and we didn't know Valencia would come back as strongly as this so it makes sense. Plus Park was injured by the time it might have happened.

I don't think Villa would ever have sold Young in that window. It has to be someone who the club was prepared to lose there and then.

I'm going to say Benzema.

Just for the hell of it....

To flesh it out... we would have got him in January if we could have offloaded Owen, and Higuain had not been injured.

Sanchez will be more of a striker now than a winger though. All 3 could play together.

We don't really need him all that much though.

Give me a frickin' midfielder.

My two biggest hopes over this season have been schweinsteger and de Rossi - the latter looking a possibility now.

Just a thought... What's all this 'not United quality' stuff? Why wouldn't players (e.g. Ashley Young) improve their game after arriving at OT? It wouldn't be the first time that a player has arrived looking a bit raw then quickly turned into a really good player, now would it?

I'm not saying that it will be Ashley Young, I'm merely using him as an example. I'm making the point that to buy in players that are already quite cleary United quality is both expensive and difficult. Buying in players who show all the signs that their game would improve if their team-mates were higher quality (and Ashley Young is a good example of this) would seem to be a better policy.
