Assuming that Rio does make the move, who what would be the best central pairing from the current sqaud?

Larry will probably start his fair share of games. IMO Larry/Rio is the best potential partnership but will Larry last the full season?.

O'Shea/Rio could be promising in the longer term but is O'Shea ready yet?

More importantly, how will Brown figure. Brown is a very simillar type of defender to Rio and maybe they wouldn't complement each other. This could be a make or break year for Wes. Maybe we need a proper 'stopper' beside Rio?

Any thoughts?

Rio and Larry will play the entire year. Fergie has made a commitment to Larry, and I don't think that Brown and O'Shea will see the light of day unless we're thrashing the opposition or one of the starters gets hurt.

I reckon it would be Larry and Rio too but I suppose the real question is 'is this the type of partenership that can lead us to another championship/champion's league?'. I know Larry finished the season great last year and he is a legend but a year older and all that........

However, I don't think he's become any slower

;)

I think it will be largely Larry and Rio with Wes and O'Shea blooded in.

But I think O'Shea will be better because he is aggressive and compliments Rio, characterwise....although if Wes gains some aggression and starts behaving like a 'devil' (literally) on the pitch, then nobody will stop him from taking the CB throne.

Come on Wes, come on O'Shea...its now or never....

shouldnt this be in the Rio forum?

Who to partner Rio not a bad question (assumin' he gets here) well it'll probably be Wes but hang on to them ole boots Larry

If Rio signs-if that is... I would like him to partner Pablo Cannavaro or Lilan Thuram but Pablo firstly because he reminds me alot of Martin Buchan, and his many attributes.

Gary Neville. He'll be the "talker" and play the more aggresive role in the central defensive partnership.

I could so make a stupid comment with that ;)

Buy a right-back. Brown is not a natural right-back either, he's a centre-half

Nesta?

or am I dreaming? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

I'm still not convinced that Gary Neville will be a world class CB. I think Blanc will partner Rio first and then Brown will gradually get in. Don't dismiss Brown so early. If he can gradually removed his error-proned and lack of concentration problems (just as Micky did), he will be a much better CB than Gary Neville very soon.

Gary Neville despite not being what you call a "world class" centre-half has two attributes to him which brown lacks - organizational skills and consistency. Neville on the right does drop some clangers but stick him in the middle and he's steady eddie. I would prefer that our next target is a right-back instead of another centre-half.

Though I afraid that if we really got Rio do we have the money to get the "next target"? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Wes Brown to partner Rio. With O'Shea getting a go in the lesser games to give him some experience and confidence. With Blanc, i think he should be used more as a back up for Brown and Ferdinand if either of them get injured. Blanc is getting rather old right now and would not be much of a futuristic plan for the defence. Given time, IMO we will have the best back four in the world.

Brown Ferdinand O'Shea Silvestre

it doesn't matter if we play two sweeper style defenders (blanc/rio/brown, because we could suck in teams deep and hit them on quick counters like we did in 99.

Veron would be allowed to come into his deep midfield role more often aswell. This way we could see world class passes from beckham and veron from deep.

all wee need is a tricky forward totake on players, like duff, ronaldhino.
