skydome to be renamed...

I remember going there when it first opened and the Jays moved there from Exhibition. Fantastic venue.

Its alright, was in toronto in 98, watched roger clemense throw his 3000th strike out and the word cup final there.

fecking Typical.

This corporate naming thing really gets on my nerves.

I laughed my ass off when Houston had to change the name after they chose a dodgy sponsor. Remember "Enron Field"?

Given the attendance at the Blue Jay's games, they should just call it empty dome.

Superb that was, they've been rubish since though havent they?
That may be true, but really the Jays are in no position to compete financially with the Yankees, Red Sox or Orioles. We're in a division with three of the richest teams in Christendom.

They could always move to some big U.S. market ;).

Are there any left? The Expos had to relocate to some two-horse town so they would be really scraping the bottom of the barrel after that. 'Sides, the US$ has dropped quite a bit, we can be competative with most US markets but not the Yankees and Red Sox (and the asbestos money in Balt). Dumps in the US like KC, Chicago, Oakland, SanFran and LA are no better off, and don't get me started on Cleveland.

At least people would show up. If you put the time in the Carolina area, there would be plenty of money.

All that pig and tobacco money?
The Jays do ok on attendance but its become clear the town needs a winner to really see support. Corporate numbers have gone to the Raptors who do well but that is still new, the Leafs seem to be the only exception.

i do believe Canadians will do whatever it takes to keep the Jays in Canada.... it's the last baseball club here...so as the Raptors...

Have Trojans sponsor it and call it The Condome.

no corporate sponsorship name plus a cool, hip name compromise.
Why does the Skydome always illicit sexual references?

Nonsense. The Jays had no improvement in attendence when Roger Clements pitched than when their #5 starter pitched. If it was question of winning or losing, surely they would have had better attendences under Clements starts.

The reasons why the Jays attendence dwindled after '93 were four fold.
#1. Canadian tax laws changed so businesses could only claim 50% of entertainment expenses. Previously 80% was allowed.
#2. Travel businesses suffer due to the lock out of '94. The Jays benifited from Tour Groups who wood come to games from far off. No games = business failure. Post lock out no return of these fans.
#3. No sell outs, consequently the fan no longer needs to buy tickets in advance. North American fans are probably the worst for walk up attendence.
#4. The Raptors of the NBA have had an effect of eating in the Jays fan base since their arrival on Toronto sports scene.

Apparently, Carolina can not support a Hockey team and has also lost a Basketball team! So, don't get your hopes up!

Apparently a lot of places can't support their hockey teams--even Ottawa went bankrupt.

Baseball, however, would do great in Carolina.

Ottawa didn't go bankrupt, but had financial difficulties and are under new ownership. They do sell out unlike Carolina and Boston to name two US teams.

Unfortunately, Since the Skydown was built with alot of public money, we lefties in Canada no longer pay huge somes to professional clubs to build stadia. Note the complete private building of the Air Canada Centre and the Bell Centre.
