............................... TEAM EAP ............................................................... TEAM HIMANNV ..........................

TEAM EAP

Team:
Why I'll win: I believe my team is more creative all through, especially in midfield and defence, building up from the deep. Will better control the tempo and dictate play.

Pretty much standard team with familiar players.
+ GOAT GK with a solid defensive line.
+ Creative two way midfield with high workrate. Redondo to run to game with defensive support from Davids and attacking support from Effenberg.
+ Flexible attack with players comfortable at the center and to drift wide.

TEAM HIMANNV

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Tactics:
  • Mid block with zonal marking - formation switches to 4-4-2 in the defensive phase.
  • Junior sometimes tucks into midfield for support otherwise he overlaps or underlaps Finney.
  • Alves bombs forward and gets on the overlap.
  • Front 4 have license to thrill with the double pivot sitting behind them.

Monaco’s Henry is a game-changer. Edging towards Himannv now.

Mendy's got on the pitch and looked around. He's asking himself: 'what am I doing here?'

Just in case Himannv wins, a feedback for later rounds.

Junior/Van Hanegem/Baggio having a tea party in those left central zones can be avoided maybe. A different LB would be my choice.

@Edgar Allan Pillow , some footage of Henry's Monaco days might help, probably wasnt a dud to write off as he seems to have played 100+ games.

The rest of Edgar's team (Mendy aside) is too good (probably even better than Himannv's) to vote this early although tilting towards Himannv for the lack of glaring weaknesses. (CB pairing a little unideal too but okay considering who all are out wide at LB/RB, can look to improve.)

Thanks.

Mendy is a huge, huge meh. Was really no one better?

Your team looks great except Henry and Mendy.

On @Himannv Ruggeri on his Madrid stint seems a bit brief to judge, any info about him during that timeframe?

Will try to post some videos later, but hard to do from mobile at work.

Henry @ Monaco definitely wasn't a dud. It was a glimpse of the player he will go on to become.

- Win Young Footballer of the Year in 1996
- Took them to Ligue 1 title in 1996-97(previous title was nearly a decade earlier!)
- Was instrumental in their CL run to Semi Finals scoring 7 goals (the record then)
- Impressed enough to make it to NT and part of winning WC squad.

He mostly played in Left Forward in a 4-3-3 not unlike his Barca stint. It not too dissimilar in what he offers now.

I need someone in prison (not just charged) late in the rounds when I only needed LB and a CM. Couldn't find any LB better than him

Mendy has faced Salah 3 times in PL:
- Salah: 0 goals 0 assist
- Mendy: 0 goals 1 assist

I think he's enough to do the job and keep Salah in line. He has assistance from Davids (esp with Baggio and Junior crowding that zone).

I'm not sure Effenberg is suited to the RCM role. He might make it work in a Magic Square but he lacks the mobility for me in that role.

That's just not true. His entire game was driving up the ball from the midfield to attack. With Cafu providing his usual width, there is nothing wrong with Effenberg. In fact, I'd argue this is a formation that gets the best out of him with Laudrup drifting left, he has full freedom up the midfield -Inside Right channels.

I'd like to emphasize this better.

There's a distinct lack of creativity from his centre midfield. Junior, Baggio and WvH all preferred the same left channels which just overlaps than be complimentary to each other.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of Alves outside of extreme possession Barca setup. He has never been a defensive astute defender. Even a young Henry will find spaces behind him.

Muller and Kohler aside, I wouldn't take any of his players into my team (have to pass Junior for tactical reasons) .

I think it came to a point where people started to significantly underrate Júnior's ability to overlap. He was brilliant at it as well.

I remember the old German poster Balu argue that Effenberg was great as a DM or an AM but his lack of stamina and agility stopped him being box-to-box. I suppose it depends how you want to use him. If you move into a 442 without the ball with Effenberg on the right and Baggio left it should be OK but if you keep the diamond more out of possession then I can't see him pulling off the RCM shuttler/ Gattuso esque role

Early Effenberg was a CM/AM hybrid, who was very inconsistent in his defensive output. Late career Effenberg was more of a holding midfielder. Both his Gladbach and Bayern stints were him starting in deep and providing vertical runs up. With Redondo and Davids, there's not need for him defensively and he'll just be free to contribute to attack.

Teams are close enough in quality that Henry and Mendy both stick out like sore thumbs. Monaco Henry was a raw although obviously talented winger rather than an accomplished striker. For Himann's team, my personal preference would be 4-3-3 with a holder so the wide forwards can operate higher and more narrow, but not a big deal I guess.

In this set up with Davids/Redondo shielding and having more defensive roles I don't think it's such an issue. Cafu on the right to keep width also helps.

As I say it can work if he goes to more of a flat 442 out of possession. Playing the defensive side of the Gattuso esque RCM does not suit him.

Which one is it?

According to the rules in the thread Career peak.

I'm voting for Himannv as Salah and Alves vs. Mendy is too big a mismatch to ignore. Also @Himannv you've incorrectly labelled van Hanegem as Feyenoord when you selected him for Eredivisie clubs excluding Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord category.

Oh, yeah, I thought that was the case but wasn't bothered enough to check!

going with h-man, just a better team overall even without poor Mendy out wide against Salah

I have it as "- Feyenoord" as in excluding Feyenoord but perhaps that didn't come across as very readable in the graphic. Seemed easier than listing out AZ, Utrecht, Xerxes, and Velox. I didn't include Ajax and PSV since he didn't play for them anyway.

I did see that and thought it was a typo, damn what a hack

Mendy has already faced Salah thrice with no goals scored by Salah. In fact Mendy has a assist to his name with nothing to Salah.

Henry vs Alves is a bigger mismatch.

First impression was that the peak versions of Laudrup and Henry would over-stretch the just-about-ageing duo of Dortmund Kohler and Real Ruggeri. But I think that turns the tables where I could see the wily old stager Kohler get to grips with the young Henry in a narrower central role he was less natural in at that stage of his career.

That is caveated though as I rate Henry highly as a left forward. Monaco had a great side for much of the 90s and went very close in the CL in 97/98.

Rate peak Mendy highly but it’s a narrow peak compared to what he’s up against. Alves and Salah is just about as good as it gets as a flank.

On a separate note, I really like the look of Junior. Started off his career as a midfielder/RB from the looks of it, but switched to LB because it was the only spot available in a stacked Brazil side. Dude looked really versatile from the footage I saw - he could slot in at RB, LB, CM, and even AM I think. Won player of the year in Italy when his competition was Maradona, Platini, Zico, Cerezo, Falcao..

As a CM/AM by the way.

I rate him highly. I think his best position is a LCM in a 3 man midfield or a left sided B2B in a 2 man midfield. Lots of creativity, good crossing blended with defensive stoutness and physical ability. Similar to Netto and pretty much a Breitner on the left.

I see him more as a DM/CM as his biggest strength is driving the ball up from the deep. If you are looking for a pure midfield playmaker (CM/AM) then better off with someone like Modric or Nedved.

He certainly can do a good job as a touchline hugging overlapper, but that's not using him to his fullest.
