Sir Alex was scouting in France this week-end

Sir Alex Ferguson was in France (Brittany :D ) to attend TWO games yesterday. He first attended the Rennes-Auxerre game to watch, according to papers, young defender Philippe Mexes, then he went to Nantes to attend the end of the game Nantes-Le Havre to watch, still according to French papers, Eric Djemba-Djemba, a 21 years old defensive midfielder born in Cameroon.

Elfie, I understand that the papers would speculate that SAF was watching Mexes, but with Brown, Ferdinand, O'Shea already solid, I would have to speculate that he was there to watch Auxerre's young striker instead. But that's just my opinion. :D

Other sources now speculate he was possibly scouting Cissé, Boumsong, Mexès and Escudé in Rennes, and Armand, Djemba-Djemba, Landreau or Mario Yepes (Colombian defender)in Nantes.

Concerning Mexès, I think it would be good to have him instead of letting him to Arsenal for example. Even if we already have good defenders, we need a strong squad and O'Shea can play at other posts than CB anyway.

I know Mexes is a great prospect, but I think we have much more pressing needs elsewhere. I'm hoping Fergie was there primarily to look at Cisse...because I really think we need to inject some pace into our side.

And defensively, I think we need a left-back before we need another CB. Personally, I think Mickey's been our best CB this year when he's been allowed to play there, and he hasn't looked too good at left back recently. So, I'd much rather see another left-footed fullback come in to the side in the summer, before we spend money on another CB.

I'd like to see SAF buy Julien Escude and then do the following.

1. Use Silvestre in a dual role as LB and LW. If Giggsy is injured or loses his form then SAF can sub him with Mickey, who has great pace and is excellent going forward.

2. Use JoS as our primary LB with Escude as his understudy.

..from a left back role.

Its a bit different playing LW

I would go for Cisse and Mexes, Djemba-Djemba would be an interesting addition too, we need forces in that department.

with JOS to take over from keano none :D cisse and escude would then be nice. :)

The Sunday Times had a big piece on Fergie's scouting mission in France. They seem to think that Auxerre's Teemu Tainio is a possible target. He's a 23 year old midfielder, Finnish international, and they say that he impressed Fergie when Auxerre played Liverpool recently and was also prominent in Auexerre's win at Highbury last October. Also goes on to say that he's small but possesses what the French call a "sisu" (warrior-like) mentality.

Elfie, have you heard much about him?

"Sisu" ? Must be a finnish word.

I wasn't aware that Ferguson targeted Teemu Tainio. He could be interesting for us at he can play either as a defensive midfielder, either as an offensive midfielder.

Yes it's Finnish. It means approx what Red15 wrote.

Yeah, sorry. Had another look at the article...and as you 2 say, it is a Finnish word.

Is he any good? I remember the Auxerre-Arsenal match at Highbury earlier in the season and as I recall Vieira had an off-night. Don't know if that was a function of him just not playing well that night or Tainio playing well.

Isn't this the third time Fergie has watched Nantes this season.

Haven't see Djemba Djemba play, but the other three are quality.

In order of priority/need: Cisse, Escude, Mexes.

Rennes also have a highly rated young keeper; Peter Cech(20), he turned down some big clubs for the guarantee of first team football at at Rennes.

Teemu Tainio is very promising finnish midfielder/ forward. His excellence is very well known here in Finland and in France too. Some rumours here in Finland are saying that, he might be going to Arsenal. I think that his contract comes to an end next summer?
And this finish word "sisu" means guts in english.

Is there any midfielder that you can compare him to...that his game is similar to?

TBH I thought Auxerre's centre midfield was their weakest area whenever I saw them.

Why do we need another small player?

Utd have enough small players & if we're looking for a defensive midfielder ala Vieira, we have O'Shea ready for that role - afterall, didn't Fergie try to sign 'Vieira Wannabe' Vivien Foe some seasons back?

yeh ... foe was virtually signed .. but he broke his leg and we pulled out !!
what about Papa Diop if we're looking for a vieira type midfielder to eventually replace Keano ?
Also agree that 'Johan' OShea could also step in there ... did you see that Cruyffesque turn on Harte on Weds .... brilliant .. OShea is the best thing to come out of this season !

Johnno for the Keano role long term these icons are soon gonna be called "Johnnos" instead of keanos :D

Elfie, how did the Rennes-Auxerre game go?, how did Cisse, Mexes etc. perform?

It ended with 0-0. Cisse and Mexes didn't play their best game, under the eyes of Fergie. Cisse couldn't score, in spite of some occasions .

The Sunday Times is normally very accurate about us, so if they namecheck Tainio, then i would reckon there is some truth in it.
They also name checked Defoe and Escude.

I hope ruomour about Tainio is true. I would love to see finn in united shirt. And more important he could have what it takes to replace Keane when he retires.

I would say Tainio is similiar to our own ginger prince Paul Scholes. He is versatile player with very aggressive attidude on the pitch. He can hold the ball very well too.
I dont mean that he is new Keano, but would be very good addition to our squad

France Football says today that he was scouting Escude and young (but talented) keeper Petr Cech in Rennes and Landreau and Djemba-Djemba in Nantes. Who to believe ? Speculations go on...

Petr Cech GK moved to Rennes for 2-3mil last Summer. He's a giant- 6'7'(197), he would offer quality cover for Fab, but he turned down Lazio and Arsenal for first team football with Rennes.
He made a big impression last season for Sparta Prague in the CL and an even bigger show for the U21's in the european finals. Set a czech record going 1120 minutes without conceding, for his club and the U21s.

Praise for his performance in the U21 European final:

Cech Czechs France
Wednesday, 29 May 2002
When the moment of the dreaded penalty shoot-out arrives it must be of the greatest comfort to know that between your posts stands a goalkeeper who over the course of the previous 90 minutes, and then extra time, has been well nigh invincible.

Tables turned
Petr Cech, the giant keeper with a big reputation to match, was named man of the match in last night's UEFA European Under-21 Championship final at the Saint Jakob stadium in Basel, after he - more than anyone - had helped the Czech Republic turn the tables on the favourites, France. True, their triumph came from penalties but it nevertheless erased the unhappy memory of their narrow defeat by a single goal in the 2000 final against Italy.

Dangerous wobble
They had, however, wobbled dangerously for the first 30 minutes as France initially pinned them back, attacking on a broad front. But once Miroslav Beránek's team got a grip on midfield they improved greatly and after half time they were the stronger outfit. Their much-vaunted opponents, winners of all four previous games in the Switzerland tournament - including by 2-0 in their opening fixture against the Czechs - wilted visibly.

Spirit of togetherness
"The French were very strong for 30 minutes and we were indebted to Petr Cech in that time" said Beránek. "But we got better and in the second half we were the stronger team." Beránek's squad have forged a formidable spirit of togetherness during the tournament, steadily raising their game after that opening defeat. The coach deserves credit for the way he juggled with his resources from game to game, resting players, but without harming their prospects of becoming the first Czech winners of this competition since it switched to an U21 event in 1978.

Cup final duty
"It was good for us to play France in the first game because the players knew how they would play, but it was very important that the players made progress in their physical shape between the first game and the final," said Beránek. Three days before the start of the tournament he still had ten players on duty at the Czech Cup final.

Domenech's tribute
The French coach, Raymond Domenech, paid tribute to the Czechs' superior energy levels and conceded his team had fallen away badly in the second half. Yet they had begun with drive and dash that pointed to only one winner early on. Pegguy Luyindula showed his pace and linked well with both Sidney Govou and Steed Malbranque and in midfield Benoit Pedretti made vital tackles and showed impeccable vision. Meanwhile, the Czechs' plan to feed the ball to their lone striker, Milan Baros, floundered as they too easily surrendered possession.

Cech spreads confidence
However, Cech began to show the quality that earned him rave reviews in the UEFA Champions League with AC Sparta Praha, making a series of good saves, spreading confidence among his defenders and, crucially, showing a clean pair of hands whenever he was called upon to deal with crosses and corners. Gradually LukበZelenka and Petr Vorisek began to get a grip in midfield and drive their team forward so that the Czechs were able to shake off the twin blows of losing Baro‰ and Martin Jiranek to injury before half-time.

'History only knows winners'
"We spoke before the game and said how much we wanted to be the champions," said Beránek. "I told the players that history only knows the winners." In the second half Beránek pushed Stepan Vachousek up alongside the substitute Michal Pospí‰il and now it was the Czechs who looked the more likely to score with Karel Pitak twice guilty of rash finishing. On it went into extra time with Cech continuing to frustrate the favourites.

'Great goalkeeper'
France were unbeaten in the qualifying campaign and conceded just a single goal from their five games in Switzerland. "This group of players have a lot of talent and have given the team their best result for ten years," said Domenech. "It is hard to lose on penalties."They had a great goalkeeper, great not only in size but also in the way he played, and that made the difference." Pierre-Alain Frau, Julien Escude and Jean-Alain Boumsong who all missed from the spot and enabled the Czechs to ease through in the penalty shoot-out would no doubt say amen to that.
