The World’s Biggest Cash Machine: Manchester United, The Glazers, and the Struggle for Football's Soul, a book released this week detailing the Glazers’ time in charge at United, delves into the tactics devised by the board to enhance profits at the club following the Americans’ takeover in 2005.

And author Chris Blackhurst reveals that the club at one stage toyed with the idea of letting supporters at the Stretford End and the East Stand attend matches for nothing – provided they added to the atmosphere.

Believing that enhancing the crowd noise around the ground would boost the experience for those in hospitality and watching on TV at home, the book reveals that board members wanted to hand fans voice meters to wear on lanyards around their necks during matches.

Those who sung for the desired amount of time – and at the desired volume – would have the cost of their ticket for the game covered by the club.

Cut and paste from Daily Mail. Not gonna link to that rag. Putting aside the issue of whether this is true or a load of steaming bullshit, what says the caf about this concept?

It sounds very Americany and I am sure some form of this has already been tried at their grounds. I'd call it plausible.

It wouldn't surprise me, the club have devised a number of initiatives with TRA in the 'singing section' to boost the atmosphere before important matches. Safe standing being the most obvious.

Another example is that pints in the concourse are £3. That's significantly cheaper than any of the pubs around OT, with the obvious idea being that fans meet to booze and build an atmosphere in the concourse pre KO, and not filter in 10-mins after the game begins. In fact, £3 for a pint is ridiculously cheap for a pint in most pubs in Manchester. For context, a pint of Beavertown is £6.35 in my local, and a Guinness is £6. I doubt the club would openly admit to wanting fans to be drunk...but certainly pricing the alcohol ridiculously cheap might lead a cynic to conclude that the club believe drunk fans equals better atmosphere...so are encouraging us to over-indulge.

In addition, for the Barcelona game last season, a text was sent out to ticket holders in TRA asking them to arrive early and help 'build an atmosphere'. I also noticed that the TVs in the concourses, which are normally on pre-game as soon as the turnstiles open, were turned off and were not turned on at all during the game. I have never seen that in the hundreds of games I have attended at OT. Again, I suspect this was because many fans would stand in the concourse until well after the game begins, watching the game on TV (bizarre I know....football fans are weird) and the club clearly wanted them in their seats, singing and creating an atmosphere for a big cup tie that was televised around the World.

I don’t think the Stretford End needs any added incentive to sing anyway. I was in there for Brentford and I could not believe the level of singing while we were down and playing the most uninspiring football you could wish to watch. I’ve also never experienced a noise like when McTominay’s 2nd goal went in at the end (having said that, I’ve only been to 4 United games and 5 in total).

Having said that, I don’t understand why this is getting a bad reception here in general. The Sir Alex, Sir Bobby and East Stands could all do with a boost in atmosphere, and what better way to do that than by giving fans who contribute to the boost a free ticket? Might even want to start this weekend against City, because the way we’re playing, the fans being our 12th man isn’t going to be enough. We’re going to need all 75,000 playing this Sunday.

At £3 a pint, who can blame them!

TVs have been off in TRA areas for years.
