Simple Plan

They're alright, nowt special. Always liked the song perfect

They are crap and add to that

American rejects, Good charlotte, chemical romance and some others.

Formulaic commercial pop-punk. They're probably kinloaded

They're pop punk, its just a genre same as ska, emo, jazz, pop, rap or whatever. Granted they're not a very good pop punk band. I am sure nobody here listends to pop punk but All Time Low, Boys Like Girls, Self Against City, Pensive, Alamance etc are all very good pop punk bands if you like that kind of thing.

I saw Greenday a couple years back with Simple Plan supporting.

fecking shite. Can't stand their in your face self pitying lyrics made all the worse by some whiny vocals.

Yep they're shite, but i dont think they're trying to appeal to people who like music.
Like Smashed has siad, the Pop-Punk genre does have some decent bands, just ignore the commercial crap. E.g, Bowling For Soup, Good Charlotte, etc.

Their lyrics :wenger:
They should just feck off and die or something

Yes they are pop punk therefore they must be formulaic.

They're not by the way.

They're not what? Formulaic? They really are.

Not that all pop-punk is bad and formulaic, just that they are. They haven't even tried, ever.

They're not by the way.

Bands like NOFX are anything but formulaic though yes i can see why there would be criticism of these commercial bands. I still think Green Day's done some decent catchy early stuff.

Pop-punk's alright when your around 10-15; after that you discover Black Flag, the Sex Pistols and the Dead Kennedys.

How dare you comaper NOFX in the same sentence as Simple Plan! :wenger:

Rubbish, I am in my early 20's and listen to pop punk. I probably have over 40 odd pop punk bands on my pc. There are good bands in that genre, its always a shame when people decide they are too cool or whatever for a whole genre of music, seems pointless to me. Oh and I was about 10 when I started listening to bands like Skrewdriver, The Exploited, Oxymoron, Rancid, Catch 22, 7 Seconds, Refused, Amen, Against Me, Agnostic Front, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Hit The Switch, Stiff Little Fingers, AFI, Anti-Flag, Pennywise, bad Religion, Lag Wagon, Circle Jerks, Fugazi, Dropkick Murphy's, Gallows, Jawbreaker, Lawrence Arms, Propaghandi, Strike Anywhere, Bouncing Souls, The Clash, the Ramones, Union 13, Embrace, State of Alert, The Germs, Horrorpops, Negative FX, Picture Frame Seduction, Mr Bungle, The Dead Pets, The Damned, Crass, The Unseen, The Descendants, Social Distortion, Subhumans, The Misfits, Rise Against, The vandals, GBH, The Sepcials, Operation Ivy, Streetlight Manifesto, Cock Sparrer, Boys Night Out...seriously I could go on. So it's not like I don't knwo what 'real' punk is.

Point is I also listen to bands like Allister and Blink182 etc, because I like their stuff (although admittedly Blinks newer stuff is crap). Fair do's if you don't like a specific band for musical reasons, but people are all too quick to dismiss whole genres of music these days.

Simple Plan are shite boyband. Even by MTV-punks standard they are rubbish.

Thing is though there is so much monopolised commerical music marketed to pre-teens and what not many don't even get to listen to the much better music until later on.

Bloody hell, i agree with absoultely all of that :p.

How do you define better music? Are for instance NOFX 'better' than me First and the Gimme Gimme's?

For what its worth; i think Blink 182 have some excellent tracks that i regularily listen to along with some other pop-punk bands.

I'm not talking about pop-punk in general; i'm talking about stuff like Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, The Calling who are so obviously commercial and lacking any sort of artistic individuality.

And we must be from different backgrounds; i'm 19 now and only a couple of years ago through torrents and youtube did i start listening to the old punk bands. Before that i didn't know that many apart from your usual bubblegum pop stuff and hadn't heard many albums either.

I'm not policing anything either; people can listen to whatever they like.

Not sure if i could define it really; just sounds different to the usual mainstream norm i suppose. That is not to say ofcourse that mainstream punk is inferior in any way but you listen to the same sort of thing for a while and it really gets boring.

Like i said though, that's my take on it. Someone once said that you can tell a lot about a person by his/her music taste; don't agree with that at all.

Don't let my ex hear you call the calling crap, her best made is the cousin of the lead singer, who's name I have forgotten :nervous:

To be fair I agree that Simple Plan and Good Charlotte are a bit rubbish, although I will admit to liking some of Bowling 4 Soup's stuff. What can I say? Their vidoes are feckin' hilarious. Oh and My Chemical Romance are the one band I will admit to hating. But I just think its pointless comparing bands from different genre's. In my opinion A band like The Movielife are (were) better than say The Killers or whatever. Few people will agree with me though, even though I am right. its horses for courses. I've learnt you can't make someone believe one genre is better. Its easier just to accept some people are cool and listen to punk, whereas others are tone deaf gimps who listen to trip-hop or whatever it is kids these days listen to.

Well many people consider NOFX to be one of the biggest and most influential punk bands of the 90's, and to be fair they would be right. Also a lot of people would compare me First and the Gimme Gimme's to, as you say, commercialized pop punk bands. And yet they are both Fat Mike's (who is an absolute Legend by the way) bands. Everyone has their own opinion of what is better. Whilst I agree that good charlotte are mostly gimps, I do like one of their songs called the river. Its good and just because I think they're annoying, doesn't mean I am not going to listen to it.

The Calling are a one-hit wonder, that song was a prime example of a radio-friendly hit that bands now are intent on making to sell their albums.

Bowling 4 soup do some catchy stuff i suppose; more pop than punk. MCR are ridiculously overhyped.

I know a lot of people who listen to stuff from RAGE and Dead Kennedys and claim to listen to certain genres as if it's a badge of honour or something yet they completely miss the point with regards to the band's message etc.

feckin hell just look at people who listen to stuff like Slipknot and it'll tell you that people don't just listen to the music for the sake of it, rebelling for the sake of rebelling and all they do is come across as insecure really.

Its good and just because I think they're annoying, doesn't mean I am not going to listen to it.

Fair enough. I still can't believe you had heard so much of that stuff at age 10; don't even want to begin to say the kind of stuff i was into at that age.

Aye some people use music as an identity. Which I suppose it is, but when you listen to bands for the image rather than the music then something is definitely wrong.

Well to be fair, I hadn't heard most of those bands at the age of 10, I just meant form the age of 10. Its just that it was about then I started discovering music, and luckily for me I discovered I liked punk. Most of the bands were discovered later on through the years, a lot of them only recently. And others like The Exploited I had known about for years but never fully got into them until the last few years. Half the time they way I discover bands is by just downloading stuff randomly, that way I don't have to worry about their image because I haven't a clue what they look like. It was a bit of a shock for example when I discovered the Distillers didn't have a male lead singer...

There's no such thing as Punk music, or if there was it lasted for about 6 months in the late 70's. This stuff is homogenised bar chord proto rock and if you like it then you like it, its all about taste. One person will tell you that Green Day used to be good when they were 15 and went out and bought Dookie and saw them at the T&C in Leeds, that person may now be into Hendrix, Radiohead, Mars Volta, Joy Division etc

:nervous:

Green Day were brilliant up until the latest album. They were simple songs that beginners on the guitar could learn and hone their skills to.

Moving four chord rock over to attempts at political punk was a disaster, and as good a band as they are live, they have lost that spark from albums like Dookie.

For anyone else who did not know who they were like me:

Gimps.

Why did you start a thread on a band you don't like??

If you don't like them why do you care what other people think.

subsequently they are shit!

blink 182 are pretty good.

Angels and Airwaves anyone?

Simple Plan are shit! unless you like pop shit.

MCR are a completely different genre. but are equally shite.

Brand New, good band!
