FERGIE SWOOP FOR
£8M DAVIES

MANCHESTER UNITED will this week make a sensational £8million swoop for Spurs ace Simon Davies after Sir Alex Ferguson was told: "You can have money to spend."

Fergie has targeted the Tottenham midfielder and will make an offical move when the transfer window opens on Wednesday.

United chief executive Peter Kenyon last night confirmed funds will be made available. He said: "If Sir Alex wants to sign somebody he can do. We have a very clear plan, we work very closely together.

"We know exactly how we want to strengthen the team going forward and we will do that in our time. We will get the players we want when it suits us."

Significantly, 23-year-old wing wizard Davies would be clear to play in the Champions League.

Fergie said: "If you think there is a player who can better the team you should go and present the matter to the Chief Executive and leave it that way.

"If somebody says here is £20million, you would go out and spend it. But if you want to do well in Europe the options are very few."

And, in an exclusive Sport of the World interview earlier this year, he added: "Who can you get who is not cup tied in Europe? It is not as easy as you think."

Spurs will find it hard to resist an £8m bid for Davies, who signed a new five-year contract in May.

Yesterday the White Hart Lane idol said: "I have enjoyed this year but I need to push on and I just need to do as well as I can when I get a chance."

Would be an Excellent signing but where would he play???

Another??
weonly have Giggs & Beckham who are proven. We need wide players more than strikers imo.

Hats off to the journo that cobbled that together. I've never seen so many old quotes stitched together into such an outwardly convincing story.

1. Two wingers are enough for the first choice aren’t they?
2. Ole is a proven right winger.
3. Diego played on the wing, and was nothing special but not shit.
4. Richardson is promising.
5. QF will return in March.
6. As a last resort we have O’Shea. I have suspicion that this guy doesn’t mind which position to play. ;)

We have no serious competition for the wing places. If all are fit and on form the Giggs & Bex play, no question about it. When either of them are out we have no balance, ie we have to stick Scholes, Butt or Veron out there and our balance is gone.

Davies played against Barcodes as an attacking CM and had poor performance. I wasn’t impressed his skills, pace, distribution or at least persistence. He did only two ‘successful’ long passes: the first one was addressed backwards and the second one he gave to player who was offside. It was Davies’ fault that Newcastle scored the opener. The guy did against Gary Speed at that moment, lost his position and allowed Speed to hit.
I know it was only one game but… 8 mln… I’m not sure.

I saw the game too, h didnt impress, as he didnt against Arsenal when he got sent off.

so, he had a bad game..big deal.
the guy is a quality young player. did you see him for Wales against Italy? tore them apart.

Yep, I saw that game but have forgotten details (except Bellamy’s goal). Could you say what position Davies usually plays for Welsh?

No i didnt. Im sure hes a great player but in the few times ive seen him this season he hasnt stood out. If i see him play 20 more games and hes still shite maybe ill be able to make a decision on him.

Its like Totti, ive seen him play at least 30 times and hes been consistently been cack. After ca 30 games im starting to believe hes shite.

can he play as left wing....would add good competiton for giggzy...and i think he can play right wing as well????....i think he would add good depth in the squad

i agree with you about Totti Murt, i dont see what all the fuss is about myself. way too inconsistent.
Davies is a fine young player though that can play both wings, though is better on the right.

that being said i dont believe a word of the story. I dont believe Fergie will admit to his earlier mistake by signing him now (when he didnt think Davies & Etheridge were good enough after a trial at United)
Bit like Robbie Keane, a player who you know would probably have been a big hit at United but will never get the chance

Even if Davies is really good, I don't think Fergie would buy him back because that would show that he was wrong to let him go in the first place. Ego problem. And it doesn't make much economic sense to the PLC either.

If Fergie wants to buy someone to replace Giggs in long, long term, he should get Duff or Kewell. Especially the latter since things aren't going well in the Leeds dressing room or so I heard.

But I maintain that Giggs is still the best winger around and is irreplaceable.

that pitch was in sad shape yesterday. i would not judge anyone on that stuff. green mud!

I think we should definatly buy him, Giggs has only got about three years before his pace will start letting him down naturally with age, by this time Davis will be in his peak? He's versitile and a class player who would grace any Premiership side!!!??

I would like to see him here, and the price is good. He definitely has the potential to be an excellent player.

Yes.

That is not the issue here.

We have higher priorities in the form of a new striker rather than a new midfielder.

I have to agree. If we're going to pay out big money on a premiership midfielder, then I can't go past Kewell. He's young, fast, has great dribbling skills, scores quite a few goals (I think he's Leeds top scorer this season), and he would likely play as the link-up man that we desperately need for a few seasons until Giggsy does retire or move on. Duff would be my second choice.

Davies does seem like a good player, but I wouldn't spend 8 million pounds on him, not when we need to get a striker. That's one of the major pluses that Kewell has, he has established himself over the last two seasons as a striker as well as a left winger.

But I'd much prefer Ronaldinho, Shevchenko, Cisse or Gudjohnsen.

I cant see us going for a player we knocked back a few years back, although we did with Rio i guess!

That said he would be a usefull addition to the squad but not a neccessity, we need to fill other positions first, he will prob end up at the poo.

he wasnt in the squad against southampton

dont think he was injured or anything

Glenn Hoddle has confirmed that Simon Davies missed the New Year's Day clash at Southampton with a knee problem and remains a doubt as we return to St Mary's in the FA Cup on Saturday.
The midfielder travelled with the squad to the south-coast but failed to make the 16 for the 1-0 Premiership defeat.

Glenn reported: "Simon picked up a whack behind the knee at Newcastle. It's too sore at the moment. We're hoping it won't keep him out for too long but he has to be doubtful for Saturday."

ANYBODY KNOW ANYMORE ABOUT DAVIES ? do ya think the story is true ?

the people who run RI not the dicks on the forum say that davies is a done deal at 13mil

and this is from the people who run the mag its self

Sounds like a pointless signing to me. Another midfield player is just what United need to win back the premiership? I dont think. Its painfully obvious to everyone that we need a world class stiker to partner Rude up front. When he does'nt play we look Average. Simple as that.

Welcome Dan!

Simon davies is a good player..... he's young and has alot of potential....

maybe we should just buy BIG all the time

(can't please everyone)

the only thing that i find puzzling about the davies link is the fact that he's completely right-sided. he cant play on the left at all. Sooo, not a replacement for Giggs. The way Becks has been playing he wont get a look-in on the right either.

so, i dont see why he's being linked to us?
good young player though

Can't see this happening at all. Good player, lots of potential, but I'm not convinced we need him - I think we should let Richardson develop, use OGS on the right, Forlan too perhaps, and buy a striker if anything. With O'Shea, we have the full back situation well in hand.
