Silvestre's contract

I hope he extends, otherwise I think we will look at selling him...for alot more than we bought him for. ;)

Despite my misgivings about his inconsistent form, I hope he signs too unless we are certain to be bringing in somebody better (anyone out there who can give mickey a run for his money?)for the sake of not causing further upheaval in our defence.

Pretty unlikely since he's only got a year left on his contract

I hope he doe's because at first I could'nt understand what Sir Alex saw in him, the season before last and early on last season he was rubbish, making stupid mistakes, out of posistion and I thought get rid of him. But now he's settled down he look's a lot better, I think he could end up a good solid defender like Denis Irwin.

IMO its just a matter of time before he's off, with probably 2 full backs coming in, Sorin and Escude. We don't let players get into the last year of their contracts often, unless they're going to be sold or released - and Mickey would fetch some money so it won't be the latter.

He didn't cost much, but should be worth at least 5m now.

There are two issues here; Silvestre would prefer to play centre back. And, United haven't offered him an extension yet.

IMO, Silvestre will sign an extension in the next couple of months. If he hasn't by Chrismas, we'll cash-in.

The funny thing is Fergie has said nothing about silvestre and his contract, not a positive sign for mickey me thinks.

Personally I wouldn't be surprised if we bought a left-back as our second defender, it's just that the shortlist is anybody's guess unlike for central defence.

He's worth more than 5 imo. He's been a consistent starter for Man United, loads of Premiership and Champions League experience, as well as a France International. Personally I hope he stays. I've watched his evolution over the past 3 years and feel like he's still getting better. Fantastic going forward, needs to work on his defending a bit though. That said, the same can be said about Bobby Carlos, and he's considered World Class by many. ;)

Well, he better sign that extension before the CL games kick in or we'll be kept on the edge by wondering what his future will be.

As for selling him if he doesn't sign, that one year expiry date is working against us.

I did say at least - its just its hard to tell with the current market conditions. The fact is thought you wouldn't be expecting him to cost even half as much as Carlos, or Cafu, which is because he's pretty useless at defensive positioning and costs a lot of goals, even if he does create quite a few.

Personally, I think we should do all we can to keep him. His improvement since he joined has been fantastic, and like you said Raoul, a pleasure to watch at times.

Unfortunately, someone must be having some doubts, as expiring contracts, especially of 'important' players are usually sorted as soon as possible.

Hopefully this issue can be resolved sooner rather than later though :)

He cost 4 or 4.5...

Just because there's no word from United on this doesn't mean there's nothing going on. Fergie wouldn't tell a reporter: "err, don't you want to ask about Silvestre?".

Micky's six months away from being able to sign for someone on a Bosman. If we've let it go so far we're probably already close to a new deal. Either that, or with our defensive problems we'd prefer to keep him for one more year and worry about a replacement later.

I agree. To let him go for nothing would be stupid.

there must be something going on here....I have a feeling SAF will sell him....all that lip about wanting to play centre half....that wouldn't go down well with SAF after he had a big part in turning mickey into a decent player..

£4m. I've pointed out before that we've been linked with more leftbacks than any other position, and I can't help but feel that when Alex was mentioning individual errors, he often meant Mickey. I don't expect him to be with us next summer - and if Alex succeeds with his transfer targets then I would expect him to be sold this summer, or early season.

Thats because Irwin left, and we need cover in that position.

I don't think we should associate Silvestre's situation with bringing in a replacement for Denis. Silvestre = Starter, Denis =was backup. We need a replacement for the Denis. If Silvestre leaves (god forbid), then all of that will change and we'll have to buy Bridge or Sorin.

I know we have a fullback in the reserves who's earnt good reviews, but my memory is shit and I can't remember the kids name - anyone? Is he left or right back?

I think the Sorin/Lopez for Veron move might happen, and then I'd expect a lesser, younger, backup player to be got as well, if the youngster I refer to above is only right-sided.

I don't. I think Veron is staying put.
