I think defensively he has found a balance now and is less prone to big mistakes...Gosh I think we have a younger version of Carlos when he bombs up and down that flank.

I think he's staying more by default than anything else, cos we couldn't land Sorin or Escude.

But surely neither of those players could unseed him. It would seem that pursuing Escude would be as a replacement for Denis.

Sorin would have. Escude would have in time. If he makes his usual costly feck ups this year, we'll regret not sorting that position out, and especially if Mickey gets injured because he is still better than Phil Neville, even if I do think he can't defend very well.

We can't be sure that Sorin would have. TBH I can't think of many LBs anywhere who could unseed Mickey. He's embarking on the prime years of his career and its in our best interest to sign him on for a few more years.

Carlos, Cole, Lizarazu, Bridge, and, dare I say it, maybe even Riise.

He's a great attacking left back, not quite as good as Roberto Carlos at that, and doesn't score goals, and not quite as tenacious a defender either, and he has hopeless positioning, yes, he's never convinced me. His positioning will never improve imo, and I doubt he's far off from reaching his plateau. I hope I'm wrong though, and that he has a great season, because we need him to - but I'm glad we're still in for Escude as insurance.

In a later post you make a reasonable point about Mikkey's positioning, which is improving but certainly a weakness. But to suggest Cole & Bridge are better is surely a reaction to your medication?

Right-footed Phil Neville played as right back is equally frightening.

Cole is a regular international left back who had a very good world cup. Bridge had a much better season last year than Silvestre, and was their Player of the Year, while Silvestre was DROPPED at the beginning of the season during our bad start. Both of them are better at defending and positioning than Silvestre. Both of them are not far off being as good going forward as well.

Carlos. That's about all.
Bridge. That's a joke right ?
Lizerazu - Too old.
Cole - maybe, but not definitely
Riise - No.

Exactly. Furthermore, part of left-sided defensive problems United have had is that Giggs often gets caught out of position after having made his runs up field. Silvestre may not help things either when he does too, but that is something I think, we can accept as long as we have a more solid CB pairing, which I think we can have.

Come on Neil, being a "regular international" for England at LB is hardly a claim to fame these days. Ingurland has struggling at that position for years. Even Phil was rightly agrieved at being dropped. IMO Cole was easily our weakest link at the back and didn't rate mention in the top ten LB's at the tourney. As for Bridges . . . well, since he couldn't displace Cole, what more needs to be said.
Mikkey's a great overlapping FB who will cost us the odd goal but more than make up for it at the other end.
Keep the faith,
