He is reportedly out of contract at the end of this season, so why have the club left it so late for discussions on a new contract?.

They probably expect to sign a back up in Escude first - which would have allowed them to negotiate from a postion of strength - and still might do that in Jan. But by then silvestre will be free to negotiate a Bosman in the close season. It's a high risk ploy given that he is ayoung quality player whose given good service for the last few years.

I think its because they expected to sign Sorin and Escude and to sell Mickey - but that didn't come off, though it may yet. Unless we sort out one or two of those in January, then they'll have to give him a new contract - if he wants it.

It would be bad biz to let him go. Keep him and get a player like Escude or Sorin to augment his abscences.

BTW he has made two decisive passes for France this week, one against Slovenia, one against Malta. The new coach wants to use him at the place he plays for United. He seems to have marked some points (as LB n°2 -Lizarazy being injured-, particularly after Candela's bad World Cup).

He'll sign. He's just making United sweat a bit, seeing how far he can push the wage demands.
