Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva says he has urged his Brazil team-mate Felipe Melo to join the Gunners this summer.

The Gunners are reported to have made a substantial offer for Fiorentina's 25-year-old holding midfielder.

"We heard rumours and he asked me. I said it's a fantastic club and if he's interested he should go without thinking," Silva told BBC Sport.

"He is exactly what they need - a powerful player with quality."

Gilberto, who left the Gunners for Panathinaikos in Greece last summer, added: "If they got him it would be great because he is a player they need at the moment.

"I'm sure if they got him it would be a good signing. I have told him Arsenal is a great club and I am sure next season they will improve."

The 32-year-old Silva, who spent six seasons with the Gunners, played alongside Melo in Brazil's Confederations Cup final win over the US and said he had been impressed with his side-kick throughout the tournament.

"He is a very good player," said Silva after his side's 3-2 win at Ellis Park on Sunday.

"Felipe has shown in the national team that he has personality and quality.

"I am sure he has a lot more to grow as well. He is a young player, strong, powerful and has a good quality in his pass.

"My partnership with him works well and I hope we can carry on doing well for Brazil."

The Gunners are reported to face competition from La Liga and Champions League champions Barcelona for Melo's signature.

Melo has played only one season for Fiorentina after joining the Italian side from Spain's Almeria last summer.

He has a reputation as a fiery midfielder and in his first season in Serie A collected 17 yellow cards and three reds.

Haven't ever seen him play and the speculation is more than likely just due to him playing in the Confederations Cup but what's he like? Someone that maybe United should have their eye on?

He would be a liability at arsenal.

Look at his card record - something like 17 yellows and 3 reds last season. In the english game that could get a bit worse if people know to get under his skin.

Also, I would love to see how Silva would encourage Melo to join Arsenal.

Melo: Why did you leave arsenal.
Silva: To win trophies, but you should so go there....

Didn't know his disciplinary record is too bad...should fit it at Arsenal then.

He is the type of player Arsenal are missing though, typical strong ball winner in the middle.

If Gilberto Silva had not been at Arsenal.. IMO he would be exactly what they need... Wenger has fecked up his CM options so bad that it ain't funny.. He should never have treated Gilberto Silva so badly and same goes for Flamini.. He should have done whatever it took to retain Flamini's services..

Think of it.. 2 players that would be perfect for Arsenal are the players that have just left them in the recent past.. i.e Flamini & Gilberto Silva..

That is not true.. What he has ambitions to lift trophies in Greece? Is that what he dreamt of a little boy? Hardly..

from what i remember, he said one of his reasons for leaving for Pana was to win stuff.

Absolutely right there.

"I'm hungry to win more titles," said Gilberto, who has now become the highest-paid player in Greece.

"I came to Greece because I have big ambitions, it's very important for me to be

Alot better than what they have. I think he'd fit in very well for them. Hes not flash or anything but uses the ball intelligently and would let Fabregas get back to his best. I thought he was woefully out of form at the end of the season.

 He is a right joker isn't he?

Melo is fecking gash. Kleberson Jr.

That one's going to come back and bite you on the arse.

Kleberson has never been a success outside of Brazil, Melo's been a great success at his last two clubs, in Europe.

The OP thinks so.

Just saying he isn't quality.

He is merely speculating.. And Yea I know even you were just putting it out there.. I just decided to put my bit out there too..

Find it funny how some dont rate him he aint a flash player but he does his job very well. Arsenal have missed out imo

JUVENTUS CLOSE IN ON £21m MELO DEAL

transfer from Fiorentina next week.

The Turin giants are keen to sign the Brazilian midfielder, who is also a target of Arsenal.

"I hope he can come to Pinzolo (Juve's pre-season training camp)," said Juventus president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli.

"That would mean that the negotiations would be done fast.

"Our relations with Fiorentina are very good. I am optimistic.

"But Melo's transfer will only be completed once the player signs the contract and I hope that will happen as soon as possible."

The 25-year-old Melo arrived to Florence from Spanish side Almeria last summer in a £7million transfe, and is contracted to Fiorentina until 2013.

£21million??!!??!!

The worlds gone bonkers

Wenger missed out on shit all. That's ridiculous money for a distinctly unexceptional player

I completely agree, first off I dont think he is that good, I just cant see why anyone would pay more than ten million for the bloke.

The Juve transfer news is about 3-4 days old. I think the deal is actually 21 Million Euros (not sure). It also includes Marco Marchionni to Fiorentina in a swap deal, but wage demands have stalled negotiations.

Hargreaves, Tevez, Glen Johnson? That fee is the going rate.

Hargreaves was arguably the best performer in the 2008 Champions League Final, for my money anyway, you're getting an absolute top draw player there

Tevez is a striker, and strikers typically cost more money, as they should with it being tougher to create and score a goal then prevent and defend one. Even then there were huge debates whether he was worth it or not

Johnson isn't worth that kind of money even Rafa knows that, he paid well over the odds

Melo is the latest in a line of pretty basic, uninspiring Brazilian central midfielders. I've seen him a good 7 or 8 times now, and he just doesn't do anything for me. He's just not worth that kind of money, and if he wasn't a current Brazilian international, and the only reason is because they have a dearth of quality player in that position, he wouldn't be

At least in Juve's case he had a good season in the Italian league. If Wenger went for him it'd be a gamble, and a ridiculously overpriced one at that

Buffon
Zebina Cannavaro Chiellini De Cegile
Sissoko Melo
Camoranesi Diego Giovinco
Amauri

subs: Manninger, Legrottaglie, Molinaro, Grygera, Poulsen, Zanetti, Marchisio, Tiago, Del Piero, Iaquinta, Trezeguet.

This is the Juventus squad as we stand that is likely to be the main challenge to Inter in Serie A this season. Some players may yet be moved on and I think there is interest in signing Fabio Grosso. It would be good to see the young Italians in De Cegile, Marchisio and Giovinco really make an impression in the upcoming season. The squad looks quite good to me albeit the defence may need to be improved, the prospect of seeing how Diego and Giovinco work together is something to look forward to, no doubt Melo has been added to do their dirty work and give the attacking players the best possible chance of succeeding.

I'm not losing any sleep over missing out on Melo, I'd rather have Matuidi from what I've seen of him.

Sean redDevil, bringing us transfer news in the transfer forum in the relevent thread. Good work.

Well I found it interesting, unlike some of the subsequent posts.

As did I, I always thought Melo was perfcet for Arsenal. He may have been gash a Juve but he was a monster at Fiorentina and was the best midfielder in Seie A in 2009.

Its a £2m initial fee with the option of buying him at the end of the season for only £3m. Even though he is 28, it seems a good price for him.

What an incredibly random bump.

Was looking at shit to do with Galatasaray because of the Berbatov transfer rumours, saw that Melo's dad was ripping into Juve for not giving his son who scored 12 goals in 36 games a transfer.

Thought to myself that 12 in 36 is a fantastic rate for and ostensibly defensive midfielder. I'm looking for some insight.

Before he joined Juve he had a season where he was a beast and the best midfielder in the league. Don't know what happened at Juve though.
