Signing a LW this summer?

Is probably complete nonsense but the Mail have reported we have an eye on signing a LW this summer, something Chris Wheeler previously reported and the Telegraph also reported back at the start of June.

Humouring the links, why would we be interested in signing a player in a position that Rashford and Garnacho theoretically cover?

At the moment I am anticipating Rashford playing more games centrally than on the left next season. I figured Mount's ability to fill in there would probably be sufficient for us not to need to bring anyone in for it specifically though.

If ETH doesn't get a new and reliable striker, I can see him moving Rashford centrally and then it will make more sense that he is looking for a left winger. If there is any truth, it is probably about considering options at a market in case we fail to sign a striker.

Sancho can also play there, can’t see him being sold. We are pretty much stacked with wide player options either side.

Another DM/CM is much more a priority as the amount of games we lost control of in the midfield last season was worrying. Fred, McTominay and Donny clearly aren’t the answer if we want to improve.

Doubt the validity but if it comes out this way prob rash up top. He really doesn't have a good defensive work rate generally at that lw spot. Perhaps eth views him as a CF. Isn't as crazy as some will make it out to be if that's the case

That is one of the lowest on the priority list.

Rashford
Garnacho
Sancho

All there for us, and if we can't shift Martial then that's options there easily.

Have we even been linked to any LWs at any point recently?

Pulisic for £20m would be a good deal I feel. Still young, and when he plays he's usually quite dangerous. Can dribble week, has a good finish. Just doesn't ever get consistent minutes.

Long shot but Felix could come on loan to cover both striker/false 9 and left-wing positions.

That would be a great deal to be fair for Chelsea.

I feel ETH prefers Rashford on top, perhaps due to his lack of creativity from wide areas and as importantly we can’t afford to bring in a world class and proven striker this window. So it‘d be Rashford + young striker.

Sancho’s situation will decide if we bring in a new LW.

Martial is there too, but maybe that's what they mean by "depending on who leaves". I guess if we find ourselves needing two CFs in this market it might be easier just to use Rashford as one of them and sign a LW instead?

Not really, but very recently Almada and Gloukh - can play out there and would very much be depth signings with versatility.

If this is true, surely we're confident of offloading some attackers.

Personally Martial will prove to be the most difficult to get rid meaning we actually get a decent fee and not having to pay off most of his wages. So we might as well keep him and hoping that his fitness improves and at least better than last season

We need a left footed winger to play RW so Anthony has someone challenging him for the role. Seems like ETH prefers inverted wingers as he hasn't give Pellistri many minutes (or maybe its just that he thinks he's not ready for PL yet).

I mean... If there really are no good strikers for sale, then we should sign a winger and play Rashford up front. Sancho can't be relied on, Garnacho is too young and Antony has been a disappointment if I'm being honest...

A decent LW won't come cheap either though.

even if he is sold. We still have Garnacho
Still very young, still has to prove that he can impact games as a starter. It will come but could see Ten Hag wanting more competition there if Sancho is sold and Rashford is considered primarily as a CF.

Our most stocked position and we potentially want someone else to play out of postion or sit on the bench...

Rashford
Sancho
Garnacho
Martial

Mbappe as the new left winger????

Seriously though, I think the Mail journalist was trying to spy on ETH's piece of paper, and he had the formation drawn, with vacancies for all the positions he is looking to fill. There were four positions down the spine, plus left wing. What the journo didn't realise was that the paper was upside down, and it's actually a right back we are after.

I see lots mentioning Rashford to go up top but if Rashford and Martial are our only striker options next season then we are in a world of trouble

My guess is the backup scenario for our CF position is Rashford going full time central, and then we get someone like Neymar on loan.
