A court in India has found a former Indian cricketer and member of parliament guilty of manslaughter.

Navjot Sidhu, a former flamboyant batsman and now an MP belonging to the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, had allegedly beaten up a man in 1988.

The man died after the alleged attack over a dispute over parking vehicles in Patiala city in northern Punjab state.

Sidhu is now a cricket commentator on Indians channels and is famous for his wisecracks, known as Sidhuisms.

The former cricketer told reporters that he had sent his resignation to the BJP after the court verdict.

A lower court had acquitted Sidhu in the case in 1999 following which the victim's family and the state government had approached the High Court in Punjab.

The High Court is expected to announce the sentencing on Wednesday.

The 43-year-old former cricketer played in 51 Test matches for India between 1983 and 1999, scoring an average 42.13.

Sidhu embarked on a political career in 2004, joining the BJP.

we all knew about this manslaughter case against him. it'd been draggin on for years. well, at least they're cracking down on him finally. what's with these high profile arrests recently, sanjay dutt, soren and now sidhu?

Would Sidhu been convicted if the BJP were in power?

On a side note, India's Prime Minister is class act.

Edit: Prime Minister

well the timing hasn't suited the BJP at all. just when they were gettin ready to pitch campaign in light of soren being charged, one of their own has been found guilty. i really wouldn't know who to vote for if i was in india. everyone seems to be corrupt.

Sorry, edit...

That should have been Prime Minister and not the president as in my previous post.

Dr. Manmohan Singh is a class act.

Manmohan Singh is a bit of puppit.

And i have a bit of sympathy for Sidhu. I doubt he meant any harm. Must be a freak incident.

Doubt he meant any harm? The guy's dead for fecks sake...not that I give a feck....I'm just glad that no-brain over excited squealer is going to be away from a camera for quite a bit.

Life is good.

Clearly one of the most obnoxious persons on television. Glad he wouldn't be around hopefully for a while.
