Thinking up of my next genius thread
On the continent Barca etc have other sports teams, handball, basketball etc and it seems to work well for them. Should British clubs follow their lead and try to do the same? I know it has been tried before (Man Utd had a basketball team) but not recently in the new age of the internet.

Sure why not, but the sport itself has to culturally relevant to the club itself. Basketball doesn't make sense.

Cricket with OT cricket ground across the road makes sense - and county cricket is dying in it's current form. Rugby League as well.

They don't really sponsor other sports. Those are multisport entities, they have generally been created like that when they were amateurs.

Newcastle had a bit of a go at one time too. They weren't all called Newcastle United, seperate names, but owned by Sir John Hall in the 90's. They had rugby, basketball and ice hockey with a lot of cross-promotion between the teams. Think they all had adidas gear and similar crests, I know the rugby team did. They also had this:

Think most of the clubs on the continent that do it were actually founded as multi-sport clubs. Not sure though, but I imagine it's harder to get things off the ground at a later date and expect people to care about the teams in the other sports if it wasn't always part of their history.

Perhaps take over an already profitable team, looking at it from a finances point of view. But then you risk pissing off the current fans of the other sports if you change their identity too much and they could stop attending.

When I mean sponsor other sports, I kinda of meant it in the American way where it's part of the club as is football. Ie it's said that American colleges sponsor * amount of sports

Looks like it's worked really well at Barca ?
