Shola Shoretire | Signs for PAOK

Surprising move, but hope he does well

Hope it goes well for him. Like seeing players leave the UK and try other leagues/cultures.

can he became a legend like Matt Derbyshire was?

edit: no, Derbyshire actually played in Cyprus.

He was really rated for a while wasn’t he? I can’t remember who was getting minutes at the same time but I remember hearing that Shoretire was the one the coaches really rated and it was a case of hoping he would fill out a bit. I guess he just hasn’t kicked on? Thought we might have gone for the Lingard logic on him and given him until he’s 23/24 to develop.

No you were correct. He won the league and cup with Olympiakos (two goals in the Greek cup final too)

He was rated extremely highly a few years ago, then fell away a bit. I’m sure I read somewhere that his stats recently were actually very impressive. So might have been putting that lull in his development behind him. I guess we’ll find out if he has or notvover the next couple of seasons.

That logic doesn't exist anymore, in fact it's rare for an Academy player with even 1 loan to then progress to the first team, nevermind 3 or 4 loans like Lingard

Now mostly they either go straight to first team (Rashford, McTominay, Greenwood, Mainoo etc) or don't make it here

His new club are through to the next qualifying round in the Champions League.

Pretty sure I remember reading him breaking a number of goal scoring records at youth level or if not he was at least putting very impressive numbers out.

Believe he maybe got his debut under Jose or if not OGS in a Europa League game and there was alot of hype around him as he was still very young at the time.

Not sure why things haven't worked out for him but he's still relatively small and lightweight so I wonder if the transition to the men's game and the physicality of it has been a struggle for him.

Has a similar build to Angel Gomes who seems to have done alright for himself since leaving. Hopefully he finds his mojo and has a successful career in Europe where its a bit less physical.
